स्मित हास्यान्तर युतम् गुणवत् मधुरम् हितम् ।
वैदेह्याः वाक्यम् अतुलम् कदा श्रोष्यामि लक्ष्मण ॥ ॥४-१-११०॥
Smita hāsyāntara yutam guṇavat madhuram hitam । Vaidehyāḥ vākyam atulam kadā śroṣyāmi Lakṣmaṇa ॥ ॥4-1-110॥
Translation
O Lakshmana, when will I again hear the incomparable speech of Vaidehi (Sita), which is interspersed with smiles and laughter, implies virtue, is sweet to hear, and is beneficial?

हे लक्ष्मण! बीच-बीच में मन्द मुस्कान और हास-परिहास से युक्त, गुणों से भरा हुआ, मधुर और हितकारी वैदेही (सीता) का वह अतुलनीय वचन मैं अब कब सुन पाऊँगा?
English Commentary
Rama longs specifically for the quality of Sita's conversation. He characterizes her speech with a rare combination of attributes: it is pleasant (madhuram) yet beneficial (hitam), and virtuous (gunavat) yet lighthearted (smita-hasya). Often, truth is harsh and sweet words are hollow, but Sita possessed the wisdom to balance both. By asking Lakshmana "When will I hear it?" Rama expresses the fear that this silence might be permanent. It underscores the role Sita played as a wise counselor and a joyful companion, whose words provided both guidance and relief from the hardships of forest life.

यहाँ राम सीता की वाणी के चार प्रमुख गुणों का स्मरण कर रहे हैं—वह मुसकान युक्त है, गुणवान है, मधुर है और हितकारी है। अक्सर मधुर वाणी हितकारी (फायदेमंद) नहीं होती और हितकारी वाणी कड़वी होती है, परन्तु सीता की वाणी में 'मधुरम्' और 'हितम्' का दुर्लभ संगम था। 'स्मित हास्यान्तर युतम्' दर्शाता है कि सीता गंभीर परिस्थितियों में भी वातावरण को हल्का रखना जानती थीं। राम का यह प्रश्न "कदा श्रोष्यामि" (मैं कब सुनूंगा?) उनकी गहन निराशा और अनिश्चितता को प्रकट करता है। वे लक्ष्मण से यह प्रश्न कर रहे हैं क्योंकि लक्ष्मण ही अब उनके एकमात्र श्रोता और संबल हैं।
