Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
संस्थम्भ राम भद्रम् ते मा शुचः पुरुषोत्तम ।
न ईदृइशानाम् मतिः मन्दा भवति अकलुषात्मनाम् ॥ ॥४-१-११५॥
Saṃsthabha Rāma bhadram te mā śucaḥ Puruṣottama । Na īdṛśānām matiḥ mandā bhavati akaluṣātmanām ॥ ॥4-1-115॥
Translation
Compose yourself, Rama, may good betide you; do not grieve, O Best among Men. The intellect of pure-minded persons like you does not become dull in this manner.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! आपका कल्याण हो, आप स्वयं को संभालिए। हे पुरुषोत्तम! शोक मत कीजिये। आप जैसे निर्मल अन्तःकरण वाले पुरुषों की बुद्धि इस प्रकार मन्द (शिथिल) नहीं होती।
English Commentary
Lakshmana begins his exhortation by wishing Rama well (bhadram te) and urging him to steady himself (samsthabha). He appeals to Rama's identity as Purushottama (Best among Men), implying that such despair is beneath his stature. Lakshmana argues that people with pure souls (akalushatmanam) possess resilience; their intellect should not stagnate or become dull (manda) even in the face of tragedy. Lakshmana is essentially telling Rama that his current state of helplessness contradicts his true nature and past wisdom.

लक्ष्मण राम को झकझोरते हुए उन्हें उनकी वास्तविकता याद दिला रहे हैं। 'पुरुषोत्तम' संबोधन केवल आदर नहीं, बल्कि यह स्मरण दिलाने के लिए है कि वे साधारण पुरुष नहीं हैं। लक्ष्मण कहते हैं कि 'अकलुषात्मनाम्' (जिनके मन में पाप या मैल नहीं है) की बुद्धि विपत्ति में कुंठित नहीं होनी चाहिए। वे राम को 'संस्थम्भ' (स्थिर होने) का आग्रह करते हैं। यह श्लोक गीता के उपदेश जैसा है, जहाँ मोहग्रस्त व्यक्ति को उसके वास्तविक स्वरूप का बोध कराया जाता है। लक्ष्मण यहाँ राम के आत्म-बल को जगाने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं।
