तौ ऋष्यमूकस्य समीप चारी चरन् ददर्श अद्भुत दर्शनीयौ ।
शाखा मृगाणाम् अधिपः तरस्वी वितत्रसे नैव चिचेष्ट चेष्टाम् ॥४-१-१२८॥
Tau ṛṣyamūkasya samīpa cārī caran dadarśa adbhuta darśanīyau |
Śākhā mṛgāṇām adhipaḥ tarasvī vitatrase naiva ciceṣṭa ceṣṭām ॥4-1-128॥
Translation
While roaming near Rishyamuka, the swift Lord of the Monkeys [Sugriva] saw those two [Rama and Lakshmana] of wonderful appearance. He became terrified and could not perform any movement [he froze].
हिंदी अनुवाद
ऋष्यमूक पर्वत के समीप विचरते हुए, वानरों के अधिपति वेगवान (सुग्रीव) ने उन अद्भुत दर्शन वाले (राम-लक्ष्मण) को देखा। वह डर गया और कोई चेष्टा (हिलना-डुलना) भी न कर सका (स्तम्भित रह गया)।
English Commentary
The narrative shifts perspective to Sugriva, the exiled Monkey King residing on Mount Rishyamuka. He spots the brothers, described as adbhuta darshaniyau (of wonderful/extraordinary appearance). Despite being tarasvi (swift/energetic), Sugriva is paralyzed by fear (vitatrase) to the point of immobility. This reaction sets the stage for the alliance. Sugriva is living in constant paranoia of his brother Vali, and seeing two armed, majestic warriors approaching his hideout naturally triggers extreme alarm. The verse captures the tension of the first visual contact between the major protagonists of the Kishkindha Kanda before any words are exchanged.

यहाँ दृश्य बदलता है और कथा में सुग्रीव का प्रवेश होता है। राम और लक्ष्मण ऋष्यमूक पर्वत के पास पहुँच चुके हैं। सुग्रीव, जो 'शाखा मृगाणाम् अधिपः' (वानरों का राजा) और 'तरस्वी' (वेगवान) है, उन्हें देखता है। राम-लक्ष्मण का व्यक्तित्व 'अद्भुत दर्शनीयौ' है—वे वनवासी होकर भी तेजस्वी लग रहे हैं। सुग्रीव की प्रतिक्रिया भय की है; वह इतना डर गया कि 'नैव चिचेष्ट चेष्टाम्' (कोई हरकत नहीं कर सका)। यह भय उसके अतीत (बालि से शत्रुता) के कारण है। उसे संदेह है कि ये बालि के भेजे हुए योद्धा हो सकते हैं। एक ओर राम का राजसी सौंदर्य और दूसरी ओर सुग्रीव का भय—यह विरोधाभास आने वाली मित्रता की पृष्ठभूमि तैयार करता है।
