माम् हि शोक समाक्रान्तम् संतापयति मन्मथः ।
हृष्टम् प्रवदमानश्च समाह्वयति कोकिलः ॥४-१-२३॥
mām hi śoka samākrāntam santāpayati manmathaḥ |
hṛṣṭam pravadamānaśca samāhvayati kokilaḥ ॥4-1-23॥
Translation
While Manmatha (the god of love) torments me who is overcome with grief, the cuckoo, singing joyfully, seems to be challenging me.

शोक से आक्रांत मुझको मन्मथ (कामदेव) संताप दे रहा है और यह प्रसन्न होकर बोलता हुआ कोयल (कोकिल) मानो मुझे ललकार रहा है (चुनौती दे रहा है)।
English Commentary
Rama personifies the abstract force of desire (Manmatha) as an aggressor tormenting him. Simultaneously, the physical agent of spring, the cuckoo (kokila), is perceived as hostile. The bird's joyful call (hṛṣṭam pravadamāna) is interpreted not as a song, but as a challenge or summons (samāhvayati) to battle against the pain of separation. This reflects the psychological projection of the protagonist; because he is fighting an internal battle against grief, he perceives the innocent sounds of nature as active antagonists mocking his vulnerability.

यहाँ 'मन्मथ' (कामदेव) को पीड़ा का कारण बताया गया है। शोक और काम का मिश्रण राम की स्थिति को असहनीय बना रहा है। कोयल की कूक, जिसे आमतौर पर मीठा कहा जाता है, राम को एक 'चुनौती' ('समाह्वयति') जैसी लग रही है। उन्हें लगता है कि कोयल अपनी खुशी दिखाकर उनके दुःख का उपहास कर रही है या उन्हें और अधिक दुखी होने के लिए उकसा रही है। यह विरही की विशिष्ट मनोविज्ञान स्थिति है जहाँ उसे लगता है कि पूरी प्रकृति उसके विरुद्ध षड्यंत्र कर रही है।
