अपश्यतो मे सौउमित्रे जीवितेऽस्ति प्रयोजनम् ।
अयम् हि रुचिरः तस्याः कालो रुचिर काननः ॥४-१-३१॥
apaśyato me saumitre jīvite'sti prayojanam |
ayam hi ruciraḥ tasyāḥ kālo rucira kānanaḥ ॥4-1-31॥
Translation
O Sumitra's son! What implies a purpose in my life when I do not see her? For this season of beautiful forests was indeed very dear to her.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौमित्रे! उस (सीता) को न देखते हुए, मुझे जीवन का (अब) क्या प्रयोजन (लाभ) है? क्योंकि यह सुंदर वनों वाला समय (वसंत) उसे बहुत प्रिय था।
English Commentary
Rama expresses deep existential despair, questioning the utility (prayojanam) of his very life while separated from Sita. The tragedy is deepened by the irony that this specific season, with its delightful forests (rucira kānanaḥ), was Sita's favorite (ruciraḥ tasyāḥ). The beauty of the season acts as a cruel reminder of her preferences and their shared happiness. Knowing she loved this time of year makes her absence in this precise moment unbearable for him. It shifts the focus from his own suffering to the tragic loss of shared experience.
हिंदी टीका
यह राम की हताशा का चरम है। वे जीवन के उद्देश्य (प्रयोजन) पर प्रश्नचिह्न लगा रहे हैं। सीता के बिना जीना उन्हें व्यर्थ लग रहा है। इसका कारण केवल वियोग नहीं, बल्कि यह 'समय' (काल) है। वसंत सीता को प्रिय (रुचिर) था। जब प्रिय वस्तु सामने हो, और उसे भोगने वाला प्रियजन साथ न हो, तो वह वस्तु कष्ट देती है। 'रुचिर काननः' (सुंदर वन) राम को इसलिए काट रहे हैं क्योंकि यह सौंदर्य सीता के आनंद के लिए था, राम के अकेले उपभोग के लिए नहीं।
