Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
संतापयति सौमित्रे कृइरः चैत्र वनानिलः ।
अमी मयूराः शोभन्ते प्रनृत्यन्तः ततः ततः ॥४-१-३६॥
saṃtāpayati saumitre krūraḥ caitra vanānilaḥ |
amī mayūrāḥ śobhante pranṛtyantaḥ tataḥ tataḥ ॥4-1-36॥
Translation
O Sumitra's son! The cruel forest breeze of Chaitra torments me. And these peacocks, dancing here and there, look resplendent.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौमित्रे! चैत्र मास की यह वन-वायु अत्यंत क्रूर है जो मुझे संताप दे रही है। और देखो, उधर-उधर नाचते हुए ये मोर कितने सुशोभित हो रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Rama explicitly categorizes the breeze of the Chaitra month as krūraḥ (cruel), completely inverting the standard poetic convention of the "soothing breeze." To the tortured lover, the soothing touch acts as an irritant. He juxtaposes his internal burning with the external celebration of the peacocks (mayūrāḥ) dancing (pranṛtyantaḥ). The visual beauty of the dancing peacocks stands in mockery of his pain. The world goes on dancing while his world has stopped; this indifference of nature is what feels "cruel."

सामान्यतः मलय वायु (वसंत की हवा) को सुखद माना जाता है, किन्तु राम इसे 'क्रूर' (निर्दयी) कह रहे हैं। यह 'विप्रलम्भ' का लक्षण है—उपभोग्य वस्तुएं विपरीत फल देती हैं। चैत्र मास वसंत का प्रथम मास है। दूसरी ओर, मोरों का नृत्य (प्रनृत्यन्तः) देख राम को अपनी विवशता का भान होता है। मोर वर्षा में नाचते हैं, पर यहाँ वसंत में उनका नृत्य प्रकृति के उल्लास को दिखाता है। दूसरों का उल्लास दुखी व्यक्ति को क्रूरता जैसा प्रतीत होता है।
