मन्मथ अभिपरीतस्य मम मन्मथ वर्धनाः ।
पश्य लक्ष्णम नृत्यन्तम् मयूरम् उपनृत्यति ॥ ॥४-१-३८॥
manmatha abhiparītasya mama manmatha vardhanāḥ । paśya lakṣṇama nṛtyantam mayūram upanṛtyati ॥ ॥4-1-38॥
Translation
O Lakshmana! See this peahen dancing near the dancing peacock; for me, who am already overcome by love, this sight only increases my longing.

हे लक्ष्मण! कामदेव से घिरे हुए मेरे लिए कामभाव को बढ़ाने वाली इस मोरनी को देखो, जो नाचते हुए मोर के समीप नाच रही है।
English Commentary
Sri Rama directs Lakshmana's attention to a peahen dancing alongside her mate. The repetition of the word 'Manmatha' (Cupid/Love) emphasizes the intensity of Rama's emotional state. He admits that he is already overwhelmed by love and longing (manmatha abhiparītasya), and this specific sight of the peahen dancing with the peacock acts as a catalyst, further increasing his desire (manmatha vardhanāḥ). This verse highlights the profound humanity of Rama; he is not portrayed here as a detached ascetic, but as a devoted husband deeply missing his wife. The dance of the birds serves as a painful reminder of the joy of companionship, making his current solitude unbearable. The scene illustrates the psychological impact of the environment on a grieving mind, where the happiness of others—even birds—becomes a source of torment for the one who is separated from his beloved.

श्रीराम अपने अनुज लक्ष्मण का ध्यान एक नृत्यरत मोरनी की ओर आकर्षित करते हैं। यहाँ 'मन्मथ' शब्द का प्रयोग कामदेव या प्रेम की प्रबल इच्छा के लिए किया गया है। श्रीराम स्वीकार करते हैं कि वे पहले से ही विरह-वेदना और सीता के प्रेम में डूबे हुए हैं (मन्मथ अभिपरीतस्य), और प्रकृति का यह दृश्य—जहाँ एक मोरनी अपने साथी मोर के साथ नृत्य कर रही है—उनके कष्ट को और अधिक बढ़ा रहा है (मन्मथ वर्धनाः)। यह श्लोक श्रीराम की मानवीय भावनाओं को दर्शाता है। वे एक तपस्वी की भाँति निर्लिप्त नहीं हैं, बल्कि एक प्रेमी पति की भाँति अपनी पत्नी को याद कर रहे हैं। मोर और मोरनी का नृत्य उनके लिए सीता के साथ बिताए गए सुखद क्षणों की स्मृति दिलाता है, जिससे वर्तमान का एकाकीपन और अधिक दुसह हो जाता है। लक्ष्मण यहाँ मूक श्रोता हैं, जो अपने अग्रज की व्यथा के साक्षी बन रहे हैं।
