Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सौमित्रे पश्य पम्पायाः काननम् शुभ दर्शनम् ।
यत्र राजन्ति शैला वा द्रुमाः स शिखरा इव ॥४-१-४॥
saumitre paśya pampāyāḥ kānanam śubha darśanam |
yatra rājanti śailā vā drumāḥ sa śikharā iva ॥4-1-4॥
Translation
O Sumitra's son! Behold the forest of Pampa, beautiful to look at, where the mountains and the trees with their peaks appear majestic (and indistinguishable).

हे सौमित्रे! पम्पा के इस शुभ दर्शन वाले वन को देखो, जहाँ पर्वत और शिखरयुक्त वृक्ष एक समान शोभायमान हो रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Rama draws Lakshmana's attention to the grandeur of the Pampa forest. The phrase śubha darśanam implies a sight that is visually auspicious or delightful. The imagery blurs the line between the mountains and the trees; the trees are so lofty they resemble mountain peaks, or perhaps the mountains are so densely covered in flora that they look like giant trees. This illustrates the dense, lush environment of the Kishkindha region. Rama's directive to "Behold" suggests an attempt to momentarily distract himself or to share the aesthetic experience, despite his melancholic state.

यहाँ राम वन की भव्यता का वर्णन करते हैं। 'शुभ दर्शनम्' का अर्थ है जिसे देखना आँखों को प्रिय लगे। उपमा अत्यंत सुंदर है—वृक्ष इतने विशाल और घने हैं कि वे पर्वत शिखरों की भांति प्रतीत हो रहे हैं, या पर्वत वृक्षों से ऐसे ढके हैं कि वे स्वयं वृक्षों के समूह जैसे लगते हैं। यह प्रकृति की विशालता और भव्यता का चित्रण है। राम लक्ष्मण को 'पश्य' (देखो) कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो दर्शाता है कि वे अपने अनुज को इस दृश्य का साक्षी बनाना चाहते हैं, शायद अपने मन को बहलाने के लिए।
