पश्य लक्ष्मण संरागः तिर्यक् योनिगतेषु अपि ।
यदेषा शिखिनी कामात् भर्तारम् अभिवर्तते ॥ ॥४-१-४२॥
paśya lakṣmaṇa saṃrāgaḥ tiryak yonigateṣu api । yadeṣā śikhinī kāmāt bhartāram abhivartate ॥ ॥4-1-42॥
Translation
See, O Lakshmana, the depth of affection even among creatures of the lower order (birds), as this peahen approaches her mate out of desire.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! देखो, पक्षी-योनि के प्राणियों में भी कैसा प्रेम है, कि यह मोरनी कामवश अपने पति की ओर बढ़ रही है।
English Commentary
Rama here contemplates the universality of love. He points out to Lakshmana the intensity of 'saṃrāgaḥ' (deep affection or passion) even among 'tiryak yoni' (creatures of a different order, i.e., animals and birds). He observes that the peahen approaches her mate not just out of biological necessity, but driven by desire and affection. This observation is profound as it acknowledges that love is not exclusive to humanity but is a fundamental force pervading all of nature. Rama is both moved and pained by this sight—moved by the pervasive power of love, and pained because this universal joy of union is currently denied to him. The verse showcases Rama's sensitive nature, capable of recognizing deep emotional bonds in the behavior of simple birds, using it to reflect on the natural order of companionship that he is currently missing.

श्रीराम यहाँ प्रेम की सार्वभौमिकता पर चिंतन करते हैं। वे लक्ष्मण से कहते हैं कि 'तिर्यक् योनि' (पशु-पक्षी आदि योनियाँ, जो मनुष्य से इतर हैं) में भी 'संरागः' (गहरा अनुराग या प्रेम) कितना प्रबल होता है। वे देखते हैं कि मोरनी केवल वृत्ति (instinct) के कारण नहीं, बल्कि अनुराग और कामभाव के कारण अपने पति की ओर खिंची चली जा रही है। यह अवलोकन महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यह दर्शाता है कि प्रेम केवल मनुष्यों की बपौती नहीं है, बल्कि यह समस्त सृष्टि का मूल स्वभाव है। राम इस प्राकृतिक प्रेम को देखकर विस्मित भी हैं और दुखी भी। विस्मय इसलिए कि प्रेम की शक्ति कितनी व्यापक है, और दुःख इसलिए कि सृष्टि के कण-कण में व्याप्त यह मिलन उनके भाग्य में नहीं है। यह श्लोक राम के संवेदनशील हृदय को प्रकट करता है जो एक साधारण पक्षी के व्यवहार में भी गहन मानवीय भावनाओं को पहचान लेता है।
