नदन्ति कावम् मुदिताः शकुना सङ्घशः कलम् ।
आह्वयन्त इव अन्योन्यम् काम उन्मादकरा मम ॥ ॥४-१-४६॥
nadanti kāvam muditāḥ śakunā saṅghaśaḥ kalam । āhvayanta iva anyonyam kāma unmādakarā mama ॥ ॥4-1-46॥
Translation
Flocks of joyous birds are chirping sweet melodies, appearing to call out to one another; yet, for me, their sounds provoke the maddening intensity of love.

प्रसन्न होकर पक्षियों के झुंड मधुर स्वर में कलरव कर रहे हैं। मानो वे एक-दूसरे को बुला रहे हों, किन्तु उनका यह शब्द मेरे लिए कामोन्माद उत्पन्न करने वाला है।
English Commentary
While bird song usually soothes the soul, for the separated Rama, it acts as an irritant. He observes flocks of 'muditāḥ' (joyous) birds making sweet, melodious sounds ('kalam'). It appears to him as though they are affectionately calling out to one another. However, this natural symphony acts as 'kāma unmādakarā' (provoker of maddening passion) for him. The use of the word 'unmāda' (madness/intoxication) indicates the severity of his mental state—it is not mere sadness, but an intense emotional turbulence that threatens his composure. Sounds that would be musical during union become tormenting noise in separation. Rama feels as though nature is conspiring to remind him of his solitude by flaunting the communal joy of the birds, thereby intensifying his longing for Sita.

वसंत ऋतु में पक्षियों का कलरव सामान्यतः मन को शांति देता है, लेकिन वियोगी राम के लिए यह कष्टकारी है। वे कहते हैं कि पक्षी 'मुदिताः' (प्रसन्न) होकर झुंडों में 'कलम्' (मधुर अस्पष्ट ध्वनि) कर रहे हैं। ऐसा लगता है जैसे वे एक-दूसरे को प्रेम से बुला रहे हैं (आह्वयन्त इव अन्योन्यम्)। प्रकृति का यह संगीत राम के भीतर 'काम उन्मादकरा' (प्रेम का उन्माद या पागलपन) पैदा कर रहा है। यहाँ 'उन्माद' शब्द राम की मानसिक स्थिति की गंभीरता को दर्शाता है—यह केवल उदासी नहीं है, बल्कि प्रेम की वह तीव्रता जो सहनशक्ति की सीमा को तोड़ देती है। जो ध्वनि मिलन में संगीत लगती है, वही विरह में शोर और संताप बन जाती है। राम को लगता है कि पूरी प्रकृति मिलकर उन्हें उनके अकेलेपन का अहसास करा रही है।
