नूनम् न तु वसन्तः तम् देशम् स्पृशति यत्र सा ।
कथम् हि असित पद्माक्षी वर्तयेत् सा मया विना ॥ ॥४-१-४८॥
nūnam na tu vasantaḥ tam deśam spṛśati yatra sā । katham hi asita padmākṣī vartayet sā mayā vinā ॥ ॥4-1-48॥
Translation
Or perhaps, surely the spring does not touch the land where she resides. For otherwise, how could she, of the dark-lotus eyes, survive without me?

अथवा, निश्चित रूप से वसंत उस देश को स्पर्श नहीं करता होगा जहाँ वह (सीता) है। अन्यथा, वह नीलकमल के समान नेत्रों वाली सीता मेरे बिना कैसे जीवित रह पातीं?
English Commentary
This verse represents the peak of Rama's anxiety and his bargaining with reality. While in the previous verse he imagined Sita grieving, here a darker fear grips him: the agony caused by spring might be fatal to her. To console himself, he constructs an alternative logic: "Surely spring has not touched that land." He reasons that if the stimulating beauty of spring were present there, Sita, the 'asita padmākṣī' (dark-lotus-eyed one), is so delicate and loves him so deeply that she could not possibly survive the separation ('katham vartayet'). This is the desperate logic of a lover who prefers to deny the laws of nature rather than accept the possibility that his beloved might die of grief. He tries to convince himself that the season is absent there, just to hold onto the hope that she is still alive.

यह श्लोक श्रीराम की चिंता और तर्क-वितर्क का चरम है। पिछले श्लोक में उन्होंने सोचा कि सीता भी दुखी होंगी, लेकिन इस श्लोक में उन्हें डर लगता है कि वसंत की पीड़ा कहीं सीता के प्राण ही न ले ले। इसलिए वे मन को समझाने के लिए एक वैकल्पिक तर्क देते हैं: "निश्चित रूप से वसंत वहाँ गया ही नहीं होगा।" वे सोचते हैं कि यदि वहाँ भी इतना सुंदर वसंत होता, तो 'असित पद्माक्षी' (नील कमल जैसी आँखों वाली) कोमल सीता मेरे वियोग में जीवित ही नहीं बच पातीं ('कथम् वर्तयेत्' - कैसे जीवित रहतीं?)। यह प्रेमी का भय है जो अनिष्ट की आशंका से घबराकर प्रकृति के नियमों को भी नकारने की कोशिश करता है। वे यह मानने को तैयार हैं कि प्रकृति का नियम वहाँ लागू नहीं होता, ताकि उन्हें यह विश्वास हो सके कि सीता सुरक्षित हैं।
