Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अथवा वर्तते तत्र वसन्तो यत्र मे प्रिया ।
किम् करिष्यति सुश्रोणी सा तु निर् भर्त्सिता परैः ॥ ॥४-१-४९॥
athavā vartate tatra vasanto yatra me priyā । kim kariṣyati suśroṇī sā tu nir bhartsitā paraiḥ ॥ ॥4-1-49॥
Translation
Or, even if the spring season is present there where my beloved is, what can that beautiful lady do? She is surely being threatened and frightened by the enemies.

अथवा, यदि वहां भी वसंत ऋतु है जहां मेरी प्रिया है, तो भी वह सुंदर कटि-प्रदेश वाली (सुश्रोणी) सीता क्या करेगी? वह तो शत्रुओं (राक्षसों) की धमकियों से भयभीत होगी।
English Commentary
In the previous verses, Rama hypothesized that spring might not exist where Sita is. Now, he considers the alternative: even if spring is present there, it is of no avail. He refers to her as 'suśroṇī' (one with beautiful hips/limbs), emphasizing her delicate beauty which is ill-suited for hardship. He realizes that surrounded by 'paraiḥ' (enemies/aliens), she is constantly being 'nirbhartsitā' (threatened or scolded). Rama visualizes her terror amidst the demons. The joy of spring is for the free and the safe; for a captive constantly living in fear, the season's beauty offers no respite. This verse highlights Rama's empathy; he looks past the weather to the terrifying reality of her captivity, understanding that fear kills the capacity for enjoyment.

पिछले श्लोकों में श्रीराम ने सोचा कि शायद वहां वसंत नहीं होगा, लेकिन अब वे एक और संभावना पर विचार कर रहे हैं। यदि लंका में भी वसंत है, तो भी सीता उसका आनंद नहीं ले सकतीं। श्रीराम उन्हें 'सुश्रोणी' (सुंदर अंगों वाली) कहकर याद करते हैं, जो उनकी कोमलता को दर्शाता है। वे कल्पना करते हैं कि सीता वहां 'परैः' (परायों/शत्रुओं) द्वारा 'निर्भर्त्सिता' (डरायी-धमकायी) जा रही होंगी। अशोक वाटिका में राक्षसियों के बीच घिरी सीता की स्थिति का अनुमान लगाकर राम का मन व्यथित हो उठता है। वसंत का उल्लास उन लोगों के लिए है जो स्वतंत्र और सुरक्षित हैं; जो भयभीत और कैद में हैं, उनके लिए ऋतु का सौंदर्य कोई मायने नहीं रखता। यहाँ राम की चिंता सीता की सुरक्षा और मानसिक स्थिति को लेकर है।
