सदा सुखम् अहम् मन्ये यम् पुरा सह सीताया ।
मारुतः स विना सीताम् शोक संजनओ मम ॥ ॥४-१-५४॥
sadā sukham aham manye yam purā saha sītayā । mārutaḥ sa vinā sītām śoka saṃjanao mama ॥ ॥4-1-54॥
Translation
That wind which I always considered pleasant formerly when I was with Sita, that same wind, without Sita, is now generating grief for me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिस हवा को मैं पहले सीता के साथ हमेशा सुखद मानता था, वही हवा अब सीता के बिना मेरे लिए शोक उत्पन्न करने वाली बन गई है।
English Commentary
Rama expands on the previous thought by juxtaposing the past with the present. 'Pura' (formerly), in Sita's company, this wind was a source of constant joy. Her presence was the catalyst that made the environment pleasurable. Now, 'vina sitam' (without Sita), the very same element becomes a generator of grief ('shoka sanjano'). This verse highlights the associative nature of memory. The wind is unchanged, but its association with the memories of Sita turns it into a painful trigger. It underscores the realization that happiness was never inherent in the wind itself, but was a byproduct of his union with Sita. The persistence of the wind serves as a constant, mocking reminder of the variable that is missing—his wife.

श्रीराम पिछले श्लोक के विचार को ही विस्तार दे रहे हैं, लेकिन यहां वे अतीत और वर्तमान की तुलना कर रहे हैं। 'पुरा' (पहले) जब वे सीता के साथ थे, यही हवा उन्हें आनंद देती थी। सीता का साथ हर साधारण वस्तु को सुखद बना देता था। अब 'विना सीताम्' (सीता के बिना), वही हवा 'शोक संजनओ' (दुःख पैदा करने वाली) है। यह श्लोक स्मृति और वर्तमान के संघर्ष को दिखाता है। राम को हवा का स्पर्श उस समय की याद दिलाता है जब सीता उनके पास थीं, और यह स्मृति उन्हें उनके वर्तमान अकेलेपन का क्रूर अहसास कराती है। सुख के वे पल अब कांटों की तरह चुभ रहे हैं। राम यह स्वीकार कर रहे हैं कि उनकी खुशी का स्रोत प्रकृति नहीं, बल्कि सीता का सान्निध्य था।
