Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कामिनाम् अयम् अत्यन्तम् अशोकः शोक वर्धनः ।
स्तबकैः पवन उत्क्षिप्तैः तर्जयन् इव माम् स्थितः ॥ ॥४-१-५९॥
kāminām ayam atyantam aśokaḥ śoka vardhanaḥ । stabakaiḥ pavana utkṣiptaiḥ tarjayan iva mām sthitaḥ ॥ ॥4-1-59॥
Translation
This Ashoka tree is greatly increasing the grief of lovers. With its flower-clusters shaken by the wind, it stands as if threatening/scolding me.

प्रेमियों के लिए यह अशोक वृक्ष अत्यंत शोक बढ़ाने वाला सिद्ध हो रहा है। हवा से हिलाए गए अपने फूलों के गुच्छों से यह मानो मुझे धमकाते हुए खड़ा है।
English Commentary
This verse features brilliant irony and wordplay on 'Ashoka' (literally "sorrow-less"). Rama remarks that this tree, ironically named Ashoka, is actually 'shoka-vardhana' (an increaser of sorrow) for lovers ('kaminam'). The visual imagery is striking: as the wind shakes the heavy flower clusters ('stabakaih'), Rama imagines the tree is waving its hands to threaten or scold him ('tarjayan iva'). Instead of offering shade and solace, the tree appears hostile. This personification reveals Rama's vulnerable state of mind, where the environment feels aggressive and mocking. He feels judged or taunted by the very nature that should have been his sanctuary.

इस श्लोक में 'अशोक' शब्द पर सुंदर श्लेष (wordplay) और विरोधाभास है। 'अशोक' का शाब्दिक अर्थ है 'जो शोक रहित हो' या 'शोक दूर करने वाला'। किन्तु राम कहते हैं कि यह अशोक तो 'शोक-वर्धनः' (शोक को बढ़ाने वाला) बन गया है। यह नाम के विपरीत काम कर रहा है। राम को लगता है कि हवा से जब इसकी डालियाँ और फूलों के गुच्छे ('स्तबक') हिलते हैं, तो ऐसा प्रतीत होता है मानो यह वृक्ष अपनी उंगलियां हिलाकर उन्हें 'तर्जयन्' (धमका रहा/डांट रहा) हो। शायद वह राम की असहायता का मजाक उड़ा रहा है। प्रकृति का यह मानवीकरण (personification) राम के भय और असुरक्षा को दर्शाता है। उन्हें लगता है कि वन का हर वृक्ष उनके विरह का उपहास कर रहा है।
