Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शोकार्तस्य अपि मे पम्पा शोभतेचित्र कानना ।
व्यवकीर्णा बहु विधैः पुष्पैः शीतोदका शिवा ॥४-१-६॥
śokārtasya api me pampā śobhate citra kānanā |
vyavakīrṇā bahu vidhaiḥ puṣpaiḥ śītodakā śivā ॥4-1-6॥
Translation
Even though I am stricken with grief, Pampa looks beautiful to me—with its wonderful forests, scattered with flowers of many kinds, possessing cool waters, and being auspicious.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यद्यपि मैं शोकार्त हूँ, तथापि विचित्र वनों वाली, बहुत प्रकार के पुष्पों से आच्छादित, शीतल जल वाली और कल्याणमयी यह पम्पा मुझे सुशोभित (रमणीय) लग रही है।
English Commentary
Rama acknowledges a paradox here. Typically, a grieving mind rejects external beauty, yet the allure of Pampa is undeniable even to him (śokārtasya api me). The adjective citra kānanā implies a forest of wonderful variety. Describing the lake as śivā (auspicious/gentle) and śītodakā (cool-watered) suggests that the environment is physically soothing, even if emotionally provoking. This verse underscores the objective beauty of the location, which stands independent of the observer's subjective misery, yet forces the observer to acknowledge it.

राम स्वीकार करते हैं कि उनका शोक इतना गहरा है कि सामान्यतः उन्हें कुछ अच्छा नहीं लगना चाहिए, फिर भी पम्पा का सौंदर्य इतना प्रबल है कि वह उनके दुखी मन को भी प्रभावित कर रहा है। 'शिवा' शब्द का अर्थ है कल्याणकारी या सुखद। शीतल जल और पुष्पों की प्रचुरता इन्द्रियों को सुख देने वाली है। यह श्लोक द्वंद्व को दर्शाता है—एक ओर विरह की अग्नि है, दूसरी ओर पम्पा का शीतल जल और सौंदर्य। यह विरोधाभास राम की पीड़ा को और अधिक तीक्ष्ण बनाता है।
