इमानि शुभ गन्धीनि पश्य लक्ष्मण सर्वशः ।
नलिनानि प्रकाशन्ते जले तरुण सूर्य वत् ॥ ॥४-१-६२॥
imāni śubha gandhīni paśya lakṣmaṇa sarvaśaḥ । nalināni prakāśante jale taruṇa sūrya vat ॥ ॥4-1-62॥
Translation
Look everywhere, O Lakshmana! These fragrant lotuses are shining in the water like the young morning sun.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! चारों ओर देखो, ये शुभ गंध वाले कमल जल में बाल-सूर्य (प्रातःकालीन सूर्य) के समान चमक रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Rama draws Lakshmana's attention to the 'nalinani' (lotuses) blooming profusely in the lake. He describes them as 'shubha gandhini' (possessing a sweet/auspicious fragrance). The visual imagery here is striking: Rama compares the glowing red lotuses to the 'taruna surya' (the young/rising sun). Just as the morning sun is vibrant, reddish-orange, and full of promise, these flowers radiate brilliance against the water. While the description is aesthetically pleasing, it carries an undercurrent of pain. The brilliance of the lotuses mocks the gloom in Rama's heart. The comparison to the sun suggests heat and intensity, paralleling the scorching heat of separation (Viraha-tapa) that Rama is feeling despite the cool waters of Pampa.

श्रीराम का ध्यान पंपा के जल में खिले कमलों ('नलिनानि') पर जाता है। वे लक्ष्मण से कहते हैं कि इनकी सुगंध 'शुभ' (पवित्र/उत्तम) है। यहाँ एक सुंदर उपमा (Simile) का प्रयोग किया गया है: ये लाल कमल 'तरुण सूर्य वत्' (उगते हुए सूर्य के समान) चमक रहे हैं। जैसे सुबह का सूरज लालिमा लिए हुए और तेजस्वी होता है, वैसे ही ये कमल पानी में दमक रहे हैं। यह दृश्य अत्यंत मनोरम है। लेकिन राम के लिए, सूर्य तेज और ताप का प्रतीक भी है। कमलों का यह सौंदर्य उन्हें सीता की याद दिलाता है (जिनका मुख कमल समान है), और साथ ही वसंत का यह खिलना उनके विरह-ताप को बढ़ाता है। प्रकृति का हर चमकीला रंग राम के जीवन के अंधेरे को और गहरा कर देता है।
