वाति न एक रस आस्वाद सम्मोदित इव अनिलः ।
केचित् पर्याप्त कुसुमाः पादपा मधु गन्धिनः ॥ ॥४-१-८६॥
Vāti na eka rasa āsvāda sammodita iva anilaḥ । Kecit paryāpta kusumāḥ pādapā madhu gandhinaḥ ॥ ॥4-1-86॥
Translation
The wind blows as if delighted by tasting various essences. Some trees are fully laden with flowers and emit the fragrance of honey.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वायु (अनिल) अनेक प्रकार के रसों (सुगंधों) का आस्वाद लेकर आनंदित हुए की भांति बह रही है। कुछ वृक्ष पर्याप्त फूलों से लदे हैं और मधु की गंध बिखेर रहे हैं।
English Commentary
The wind is personified as a connoisseur or a gourmet who is 'delighted' (sammodita) after tasting many different essences ('na eka rasa'). As it passes through the forest, it picks up the distinct scents of various blooming trees, creating a complex perfume. Rama notes that some trees are completely covered ('paryapta') with flowers, acting as the source of this honey-scented breeze. This description appeals to the sense of smell (olfactory imagery). The 'delight' of the wind contrasts with Rama's lack of delight. The fragrant breeze, usually a source of comfort, becomes a tormentor for the lovelorn hero, serving as a constant reminder of the sensory pleasures he cannot share with Sita.

इस श्लोक में वायु को एक रसिक के रूप में चित्रित किया गया है। 'न एक रस आस्वाद' का अर्थ है कि हवा केवल एक फूल की गंध नहीं ले रही, बल्कि जंगल के विभिन्न पुष्पों की मिली-जुली सुगंध का पान कर रही है। इससे ऐसा लगता है कि वायु 'सम्मोदित' (अत्यंत प्रसन्न) है। राम महसूस करते हैं कि हवा सुगन्धित, शीतल और मंद है—जो सामान्य स्थिति में सुखद होती है, लेकिन विरह में यह 'मलय-अनिल' अग्नि के समान दाहक बन जाती है। वृक्षों से झरती मधु की गंध वातावरण को भारी और मादक बना रही है, जिससे राम की इंद्रियाँ और अधिक उत्तेजित और व्यथित हो रही हैं।
