Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अनुयातः च माम् तूर्णम् अयम् भ्राता सुदारुणः ।
स तु दृष्ट्वा एव माम् रात्रौ स द्वितीयम् महाबलः ॥४-१०-१५॥
anuyātaḥ ca mām tūrṇam ayam bhrātā sudāruṇaḥ |
sa tu dṛṣṭvā eva mām rātrau sa dvitīyam mahābalaḥ ॥4-10-15॥
Translation
(Vali continues): "Then this extremely cruel brother of mine quickly followed me. When that mighty demon saw me in the night accompanied by a second person..."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(वाली कहता है): "तब यह मेरा 'अत्यंत क्रूर' (सुदारुण) भाई भी तेजी से मेरे पीछे आया। उस महाबली (मायावी) ने जब रात में मुझे 'दूसरे के साथ' (स द्वितीयम्) देखा..."
English Commentary
Vali’s paranoid interpretation of events comes to the fore. He refers to Sugriva as sudarunah (very cruel/terrible), a shocking descriptor for a brother who followed him out of loyalty. Vali twists the act of backup into an act of stalking with malicious intent. He implies that Sugriva followed him not to help, but to ensure his demise. The phrase sa dvitiyam (with a second one) indicates that the demon saw two adversaries. While stating the physical fact that Sugriva followed him, Vali poisons the context by assigning a sinister motive to Sugriva’s actions. This demonstrates how deep Vali’s suspicion runs; he is incapable of seeing Sugriva’s actions as anything other than a power grab.

इस श्लोक में वाली की मानसिक विकृति स्पष्ट होती है। वह अपने सगे भाई सुग्रीव को, जो उसकी सहायता के लिए पीछे गया था, 'सुदारुणः' (अत्यंत भयानक/क्रूर) कहता है। वाली ने सुग्रीव के भ्रातृ-प्रेम और सहायता को 'षड्यंत्र' के रूप में व्याख्यायित (interpret) किया है। उसका मानना है कि सुग्रीव उसके पीछे इसलिए आया था ताकि मौका मिलते ही उसे मरवा सके या गुफा में कैद कर सके। 'स द्वितीयम्' (दूसरे व्यक्ति के साथ) का उल्लेख यह बताता है कि मायावी दो योद्धाओं को देखकर डर गया था। वाली तथ्यों को तोड़-मरोड़ नहीं रहा, लेकिन उन तथ्यों के पीछे की 'नीयत' को गलत बता रहा है, जिससे सुग्रीव पूरी सभा के सामने खलनायक बन जाए।
