English Commentary
Vali continues to construct a narrative that vilifies Sugriva. He explicitly refers to Sugriva as krura darshanah (one with a cruel look/aspect). This epithet reflects Vali's retrospective bias; he projects his current hatred onto the memory of his brother standing at the cave entrance. By describing the cave as sughoram (terrifying) and sumahad (huge), Vali emphasizes the gravity of the situation to highlight his own bravery in entering it versus the alleged treachery of the brother left behind. Vali is setting the stage to argue that he gave clear instructions which a loyal brother would have followed, implying that Sugriva's subsequent actions were born of innate cruelty rather than misunderstanding.
