स्थितोऽयम् इति मत्वा अहम् प्रविष्टः तु दुरासदम् ।
तम् मे मार्गयतः तत्र गतः संवत्सरः तदा ॥४-१०-१९॥
sthito'yam iti matvā aham praviṣṭaḥ tu durāsadam |
tam me mārgayataḥ tatra gataḥ saṃvatsaraḥ tadā ॥4-10-19॥
Translation
Thinking "He is staying here," I entered that difficult-to-access cave. While I was searching for him there, a year passed.
हिंदी अनुवाद
"यह (द्वार पर) खड़ा है," ऐसा मानकर मैं उस दुर्गम गुफा में प्रविष्ट हो गया। वहाँ उसे (राक्षस को) खोजते हुए मुझे तब एक वर्ष बीत गया।
English Commentary
Vali highlights two points here: his misplaced trust and the duration of his ordeal. He entered the durasadam (impassable/dangerous) cave believing Sugriva was guarding the exit. The phrase gatah samvatsarah (a year passed) is crucial. It underlines the sheer stamina and persistence of Vali, who spent a full year tracking the demon in the dark. While this duration explains why Sugriva might have logically concluded Vali was lost, Vali uses it to emphasize his own dedication to the task. He frames the narrative to show that while he was toiling for a year in darkness for the safety of the realm, his brother presumably betrayed him outside.

वाली बताता है कि उसने सुग्रीव पर भरोसा किया था ('स्थितोऽयम् इति मत्वा' - यह यहीं रुका है, ऐसा मानकर)। यह कथन सुग्रीव के कथित विश्वासघात को और गहरा दिखाने के लिए है। 'दुरासदम्' (जहाँ जाना बहुत कठिन हो) गुफा में प्रवेश करना वाली के साहस को दर्शाता है। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण तथ्य यहाँ 'गतः संवत्सरः' (एक वर्ष बीत गया) है। यह समय अवधि बहुत लंबी है। एक वर्ष तक गुफा में संघर्ष या खोज करना वाली के धैर्य और शक्ति का परिचायक है, किन्तु यही समय सुग्रीव के धैर्य टूटने का कारण भी बना होगा। वाली इस तथ्य का प्रयोग यह दिखाने के लिए कर रहा है कि उसने कितनी लंबी तपस्या की, जबकि सुग्रीव (उसके अनुसार) अधीर होकर राज्य हड़पने चला गया।
