विक्रोशमानस्य तु मे सुग्रीव इति पुनः पुनः ।
यतः प्रतिवचो नास्ति ततः अहम् भृश दुःखितः ॥४-१०-२३॥
Vikrośamānasya tu me sugrīva iti punaḥ punaḥ । Yataḥ prativaco nāsti tataḥ aham bhṛśa duḥkhitaḥ ॥4-10-23॥
Translation
Though I cried out loudly again and again, identifying myself as "Sugriva," when there was no reply from within, I became extremely distressed.

मेरे द्वारा बार-बार 'सुग्रीव (यहाँ है)' ऐसा पुकारने पर भी जब उधर से कोई उत्तर नहीं मिला, तब मैं अत्यंत दुखी हो गया।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the critical moment of misunderstanding that defined the conflict between the brothers. Sugriva, standing guard at the cave entrance, calls out repeatedly. The phrase "Sugriva iti" suggests he was shouting his own name to identify himself to Vali, hoping for a sign of life. The silence from the cave was deafening and led to the catastrophic assumption that Vali had perished at the hands of the demon Mayavi. Sugriva’s immense sorrow (bhṛśa duḥkhitaḥ) proves his innocence; he was not a conspirator waiting to seize the throne, but a concerned brother waiting for a signal. The lack of a "counter-voice" (prativachana) convinced him that the worst had happened, setting in motion the tragic chain of events that led to his installation as king and subsequent accusation of treachery.

इस श्लोक में सुग्रीव की मानसिक वेदना और विवशता का चित्रण है। गुफा के द्वार पर खड़े होकर सुग्रीव ने अपने भाई को संकेत देने के लिए बार-बार अपना नाम पुकारा, ताकि यदि वाली जीवित हों तो उत्तर दें। 'सुग्रीव इति' का अर्थ है कि उन्होंने अपनी पहचान बताते हुए आवाज लगाई। जब भीतर से कोई प्रतिवचन (उत्तर) नहीं आया, तो सुग्रीव ने अनिष्ट की आशंका कर ली। यह मौन ही उस बड़ी गलतफहमी (भ्रांति) की नींव बना, जिसके कारण आगे का सारा संघर्ष हुआ। सुग्रीव को लगा कि मायावी दानव ने वाली का वध कर दिया है और अब वह शांत है। भाई के प्रति प्रेम और राज्य की सुरक्षा की चिंता में डूबे सुग्रीव का दुःख यहाँ चरम पर है। यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि सुग्रीव ने जानबूझकर द्वार बंद नहीं किया था, बल्कि उत्तर न मिलने पर उन्होंने भाई को मृत मान लिया था।
