तेन अहम् अपविद्धः च हृत दारः च राघव ।
तत् भयात् च महीम् सर्वान् क्रान्तवान् स वन अर्णवाम् ॥४-१०-२७॥
Tena aham apaviddhaḥ ca hṛta dāraḥ ca rāghava । Tat bhayāt ca mahīm sarvān krāntavān sa vana arṇavām ॥4-10-27॥
Translation
O Raghava, I was rejected by him and my wife was stolen. Out of fear of him, I traversed the entire earth with its forests and oceans.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राघव! उस (वाली) के द्वारा मैं ठुकराया गया और मेरी पत्नी का भी हरण कर लिया गया। उसके भय के कारण मैं वनों और सागरों सहित पूरी पृथ्वी पर भटकता रहा।
English Commentary
Sugriva summarizes the totality of his suffering to Rama. He was not only "thrown away" (apaviddhaḥ) but suffered the ultimate personal violation: the theft of his wife (hṛta dāraḥ), Ruma. In the ethos of the time, appropriating a younger brother's wife was a heinous sin, establishing Vali’s unrighteousness despite his strength. Sugriva explains that his exile was not stationary; he was hunted. Driven by the sheer terror (bhayāt) of Vali’s wrath, he fled across the entire globe, traversing forests and oceans. This hyperbolic description emphasizes that there was no safe harbor on earth because of Vali's immense reach and power. This sets the stage for why he eventually chose Rishyamuka—it was the only blind spot in Vali's dominion.

सुग्रीव अब अपनी व्यथा का सार श्रीराम के समक्ष रखते हैं। वाली ने न केवल उन्हें देश से निकाला ('अपविद्धः'), बल्कि उनकी पत्नी रूमा का हरण करके घोर पाप भी किया ('हृत दारः')। शास्त्रों के अनुसार, छोटे भाई की पत्नी का हरण महापाप है। सुग्रीव बताते हैं कि वाली का भय इतना व्याप्त था कि वे कहीं भी सुरक्षित नहीं थे। 'क्रान्तवान् स वन अर्णवाम्'—उन्होंने जंगलों और समुद्रों वाली पूरी पृथ्वी का चक्कर लगा लिया, लेकिन वाली के भय से उन्हें कहीं शरण नहीं मिली। यह दर्शाता है कि वाली का प्रभाव और शक्ति कितनी व्यापक थी। सुग्रiva का जीवन एक भगोड़े जैसा हो गया था, जहाँ मृत्यु हर क्षण उनका पीछा कर रही थी। यहाँ 'राघव' संबोधन का प्रयोग कर वे श्रीराम से संरक्षण की मूक प्रार्थना कर रहे हैं।
