ऋश्यमूकम् गिरि वरम् भार्या हरण दुःखितः ।
प्रविष्टो अस्मि दुराधर्षम् वालिनः कारणान्तरे ॥४-१०-२८॥
Ṛśyamūkam giri varam bhāryā haraṇa duḥkhitaḥ । Praviṣṭo asmi durādharṣam vālinaḥ kāraṇāntare ॥4-10-28॥
Translation
Grieving over the abduction of my wife, I entered this excellent mountain, Rishyamuka, which is unapproachable to Vali due to a specific reason [a curse].

अपनी पत्नी के हरण से दुखी होकर, मैं इस श्रेष्ठ पर्वत ऋष्यमूक में प्रविष्ट हुआ हूँ, जो एक विशेष कारण (मतंग मुनि के शाप) से वाली के लिए अगम्य (जहाँ वह आक्रमण नहीं कर सकता) है।
English Commentary
Sugriva concludes his backstory by explaining his current residence on Mount Rishyamuka. Weighted down by the sorrow of his wife's abduction, he sought sanctuary here. He describes the mountain as durādharṣam (difficult to attack/invincible) for Vali due to kāraṇāntare—literally "another reason" or a "special cause." This alludes to the curse of Sage Matanga, who forbade Vali from entering this region under penalty of death (after Vali flung the demon Dundubhi’s carcass into the sage's hermitage). This specific detail tells Rama that Sugriva is not here by choice of luxury, but out of desperate survival. It is the only place in the world where Vali’s physical might is neutralized by spiritual law, making it the perfect base for their new alliance.

अपनी कहानी का समापन करते हुए सुग्रीव बताते हैं कि वे ऋष्यमूक पर्वत पर क्यों छिपे हैं। पत्नी के वियोग में दुखी ('भार्या हरण दुःखितः') सुग्रीव ने पूरी पृथ्वी छान मारने के बाद इस पर्वत को चुना। इसे 'दुराधर्षम्' (जहाँ हमला करना कठिन हो) कहा गया है, लेकिन किसी भौतिक किलेबंदी के कारण नहीं, बल्कि 'कारणान्तरे' (एक विशेष कारण) से। वह कारण मतंग मुनि का शाप है, जिसके अनुसार यदि वाली यहाँ आएगा तो उसकी मृत्यु हो जाएगी (यह कथा किष्किन्धा काण्ड में अन्यत्र विस्तार से है)। सुग्रीव के लिए यह पर्वत केवल निवास स्थान नहीं, बल्कि एकमात्र अभेद्य कवच है। यहाँ वह अपनी पीड़ा के साथ सुरक्षित तो है, किंतु अपनी पत्नी और राज्य को पुनः प्राप्त करने में असमर्थ है, इसलिए उसे श्रीराम की सहायता की आवश्यकता है।
