Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अभिषिक्तो न कामेन तन्मे क्षन्तुम् त्वम् अर्हसि ।
त्वम् एव राजा मानार्हः सदा च अहम् यथा पुरा ॥४-१०-७॥
abhiṣikto na kāmena tanme kṣantum tvam arhasi |
tvam eva rājā mānārhaḥ sadā ca aham yathā purā ॥4-10-7॥
Translation
I was consecrated as King, but not by my own desire; therefore, you ought to forgive me for this. You alone are the King worthy of honor, and I remain as I was before.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन्होंने मेरा राज्याभिषेक कर दिया, मेरी अपनी इच्छा (काम) से नहीं; इसलिए मेरे उस अपराध को आपको क्षमा कर देना चाहिए। सम्मान के योग्य राजा आप ही हैं और मैं सदा की भाँति (आपका सेवक) हूँ।
English Commentary
This verse represents the core of Sugriva's apology and submission. By asserting na kamena (not by desire), Sugriva clarifies that he accepted the coronation only out of duty to the state, as the Dharma of politics dictates that a kingdom cannot remain kingless. He unequivocally restores the hierarchy, declaring Vali the only manarha (worthy of honor/kingship). Sugriva displays no attachment to the power he briefly held; he offers a complete reversion to the status quo ante (yatha pura). This indicates that his loyalty remains intact. He asks for forgiveness not merely as a favor, but as something he deserves (arhasi) because his intentions were never malafide. It is a plea for the restoration of their brotherhood over the politics of the throne.

यह श्लोक सुग्रीव की विनम्रता और भ्रातृ-भक्ति का चरम उदाहरण है। 'न कामेन' (इच्छा से नहीं) कहकर सुग्रीव स्पष्ट करते हैं कि सत्ता सुख उनका उद्देश्य कभी नहीं था। राजनीति का धर्म है कि सिंहासन रिक्त नहीं रह सकता, इसी बाध्यता के कारण उन्होंने पद स्वीकार किया। अब जब वाली लौट आए हैं, तो सुग्रीव तुरंत पुरानी मर्यादा को पुनर्स्थापित करते हैं—'त्वम् एव राजा' (आप ही राजा हैं)। वे अपने लिए किसी द्वैत शासन या हिस्सेदारी की मांग नहीं करते, बल्कि 'यथा पुरा' (जैसे पहले था) स्थिति में लौटने का प्रस्ताव रखते हैं। यह क्षमायाचना केवल भय से नहीं, बल्कि धर्म और नैतिक मूल्यों के पालन से प्रेरित है।
