तम् समीक्ष्य आगतम् रामम् सुग्रीवः सह लक्ष्मणम् ।
ह्रीमान् दीनम् उवाच इदम् वसुधाम् अवलोकयन् ॥ ॥४-१२-२५॥
tam samīkṣya āgatam rāmam sugrīvaḥ saha lakṣmaṇam । hrīmān dīnam uvāca idam vasudhām avalokayan ॥ ॥4-12-25॥
Translation
Seeing Rama arrive with Lakshmana, Sugriva, filled with shame, looked at the ground and spoke these sorrowful words.

राम को लक्ष्मण सहित आया देख, लज्जित हुए सुग्रीव ने पृथ्वी की ओर देखते हुए यह दीन वचन कहा।
English Commentary
Sugriva's state of mind is encapsulated in the word 'hrīmān' (ashamed). For a warrior, fleeing the battlefield is the ultimate disgrace. The phrase 'vasudhām avalokayan' (looking at the earth) indicates his inability to make eye contact with Rama. This shame stems from his defeat and potentially from the feeling of betrayal. Sugriva's self-esteem is crushed, and the text suggests that his mental anguish at this moment outweighs his physical injuries. He feels exposed and vulnerable before his new allies.

सुग्रीव की मनोदशा का वर्णन 'ह्रीमान्' (लज्जित) शब्द से किया गया है। एक क्षत्रिय या योद्धा के लिए युद्ध के मैदान से भागना अपमानजनक होता है। 'वसुधाम् अवलोकयन्' (पृथ्वी को देखते हुए) यह दर्शाता है कि सुग्रीव राम से आँख मिलाने में असमर्थ थे। यह लज्जा पराजय की भी है और संभवतः इस भावना की भी कि राम ने उन्हें धोखा दिया। सुग्रीव का स्वाभिमान आहत हुआ है, और उनकी शारीरिक पीड़ा से अधिक उनकी मानसिक वेदना यहाँ प्रबल है।
