Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ततो अहम् रूप सादृश्यात् मोहितो वानरोत्तम ।
न उत्सृजामि महावेगम् शरम् शत्रु निबर्हणम् ॥ ॥४-१२-३२॥
tato aham rūpa sādṛśyāt mohito vānarottama । na utsṛjāmi mahāvegam śaram śatru nibarhaṇam ॥ ॥4-12-32॥
Translation
"Therefore, deluded by the similarity of appearance, O best of Vanaras, I did not release that arrow of great speed, the destroyer of enemies."

"इसलिए, रूप की समानता के कारण मोहित (भ्रमित) होकर, हे वानरश्रेष्ठ! मैंने वह महान वेग वाला और शत्रु-नाशक बाण नहीं छोड़ा।"
English Commentary
Rama admits his human limitation—he was 'mohita' (confused/deluded) by the visual similarity. By addressing Sugriva as 'vānarottama' (best of monkeys), he reaffirms respect. Rama describes his arrow as 'śatru nibarhaṇam' (destroyer of enemies), implying it is unfailing. Once released, death was certain. Rama’s restraint was to ensure that the death would be that of the enemy (Vali), not the ally, highlighting his incredible discipline over his weaponry.

राम अपनी मानवीय सीमा स्वीकार करते हैं—वे 'मोहित' (भ्रमित) हो गए थे। 'वानरोत्तम' (वानरों में श्रेष्ठ) कह कर वे सुग्रीव का सम्मान बढ़ाते हैं। राम अपने बाण को 'शत्रु निबर्हणम्' (शत्रु का नाश करने वाला) कहते हैं, जिसका अर्थ है कि बाण अमोघ है। यदि वह छूट जाता, तो किसी न किसी की मृत्यु निश्चित थी। राम यह सुनिश्चित करना चाहते थे कि वह मृत्यु शत्रु (वाली) की हो, मित्र की नहीं।
