जीवित अन्तकरम् घोरम् सादृश्यात् तु विशंकितः ।
मूलघातो न नौ स्याद्धि द्वयोः इति कृतो मया ॥ ॥४-१२-३३॥
jīvita antakaram ghoram sādṛśyāt tu viśaṅkitaḥ । mūlaghāto na nau syāddhi dvayoḥ iti kṛto mayā ॥ ॥4-12-33॥
Translation
"Apprehensive due to the resemblance, I did not shoot that terrible life-ending arrow, lest it result in the destruction of the root/foundation for both of us."

"सादृश्य (समानता) के कारण आशंकित होकर मैंने वह भयंकर प्राणान्तक बाण नहीं चलाया, ताकि हम दोनों का मूल-नाश (सर्वनाश) न हो जाए।"
English Commentary
This verse is critical. 'Mūlaghātaḥ' (destruction of the root) has profound implications. If Sugriva were killed, it wouldn't just be his end; the entire mission—finding Sita and defeating Ravana (the root purpose)—would collapse. The phrase 'nau dvayoḥ' (for both of us) indicates that Sugriva's death would be equally catastrophic for Rama. This demonstrates Rama's foresight; he refused to take a tactical risk that could result in strategic suicide.

यह श्लोक अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। 'मूलघातः' (जड़ से विनाश) का अर्थ गहरा है। यदि सुग्रीव मारे जाते, तो केवल सुग्रीव का अंत नहीं होता, बल्कि सीता की खोज और रावण वध का उद्देश्य (मूल) भी नष्ट हो जाता। 'नौ द्वयोः' (हम दोनों का) का प्रयोग बताता है कि सुग्रीव की मृत्यु राम के लिए भी उतनी ही विनाशकारी होती। यह राम की दूरदर्शिता (foresight) है कि उन्होंने अनिश्चितता में बाण चलाने का जोखिम (Risk) नहीं उठाया।
