Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स तथा शुशुभे श्रीमान् लतया कण्ठ सक्तया ।
मालया इव बलाकानाम् ससंध्य इव तोयदः ॥ ॥४-१२-४१॥
sa tathā śuśubhe śrīmān latayā kaṇṭha saktayā । mālayā iva balākānām sasaṃdhya iva toyadaḥ ॥ ॥4-12-41॥
Translation
Adorned with that creeper around his neck, the glorious Sugriva shone like a rain-cloud at twilight adorned with a garland of cranes.
हिंदी अनुवाद
गले में पड़ी उस लता से शोभायमान सुग्रीव ऐसे सुशोभित हुए, जैसे संध्याकालीन बादलों (तोयद) के बीच बगुलों की पंक्ति (बलाका-माला) सुशोभित होती है।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs a striking simile here. Sugriva, likely dark or tawny in complexion (like a cloud), contrasts with the white flowers of the Gajapushpi creeper, likened to a row of cranes (balākā). The reference to 'sasaṃdhya' (twilight) captures the mood—ominous, heavy, and signaling the approaching end (of Vali). This aesthetic description provides a poetic pause before the violence ensues.

वाल्मीकि यहाँ एक अद्भुत उपमा (Simile) देते हैं। सुग्रीव का वर्ण संभवतः गहरा या सांवला (बादल जैसा) है, और सफेद फूलों वाली गजपुष्पी लता बगुलों की पंक्ति जैसी है। 'ससंध्य' (संध्याकालीन) का प्रयोग वातावरण में आसन्न युद्ध के तनाव और गंभीरता को दर्शाता है। यह सौंदर्यबोध युद्ध की विभीषिका के बीच एक कलात्मक विराम है।
