ततो रोष परीत अंगो वाली स कनक प्रभः ।
उपरक्त इव आदित्यः सद्यो निष्प्रभताम् गतः ॥४-१५-३॥
tato roṣa parīta ango vālī sa kanaka prabhaḥ । uparakta iva ādityaḥ sadyo niṣprabhatām gataḥ ॥ ॥4-15-3॥
Translation
Then, Vali, possessed by rage in all his limbs, though usually shining like gold, instantly became lusterless like the sun during an eclipse.

तब क्रोध से व्याप्त अंगों वाला वह स्वर्ण-कांति युक्त वाली, ग्रहण लगे हुए सूर्य की भांति तत्काल कांतिहीन (निस्तेज) हो गया।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses a powerful celestial simile here. Vali is compared to the sun (ādityaḥ) due to his golden hue (kanaka prabhaḥ) and immense power. However, consumed by rage, he loses his luster (niṣprabhatām gataḥ) just like the sun during an eclipse (uparakta). This imagery suggests that anger is an obscuring force that dims one's inner light and glory. It also foreshadows his impending fall—an eclipse of the "Sun" of Kishkindha.

वाल्मीकि यहाँ वाली के क्रोध को उसके विनाश का कारण बताते हुए एक उपमा देते हैं। वाली स्वाभाविक रूप से 'कनक प्रभः' (सोने जैसा चमकदार) है, जो उसके ओज और बल का प्रतीक है। किन्तु क्रोध आते ही वह 'उपरक्त इव आदित्यः' (ग्रहण लगे सूर्य जैसा) हो गया। क्रोध मनुष्य के विवेक और तेज को वैसे ही ग्रस लेता है जैसे राहु सूर्य को। यह 'निष्प्रभता' (कांतिहीनता) उसके आसन्न मृत्यु का अपशकुन है।
