Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तदा हि तारा हितम् एव वाक्यम् तम् वालिनम् पथ्यम् इदम् बभाषे ।
न रोचते तद् वचनम् हि तस्य काल अभिपन्नस्य विनाश काले ॥ ॥४-१५-३१॥
tadā hi tārā hitam eva vākyam tam vālinam pathyam idam babhāṣe । na rocate tad vacanam hi tasya kāla abhipannasya vināśa kāle ॥ ॥4-15-31॥
Translation
Then Tara spoke these beneficial and wholesome words to Vali. But, being under the sway of Time (Destiny/Death), those words did not appeal to him at the time of his destruction.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस समय तारा ने वाली से यह हितकारी और पथ्य (कल्याणकारी) वचन कहे, किन्तु काल (मृत्यु) के वश में होने के कारण, विनाश-काल में उसे वे वचन अच्छे नहीं लगे।
English Commentary
This verse serves as the narrator’s tragic commentary. Valmiki notes that despite Tara's advice being objectively beneficial (hitam) and wholesome (pathyam), Vali rejected it. The reason given is Kāla abhipannasya—he was possessed or overtaken by Time (Death). In Indian thought, when one's end is near, their intellect becomes inverted, causing them to reject safety and embrace danger. It signifies that Vali’s impending fall was destined, rendering him deaf to wisdom.
हिंदी टीका
यह श्लोक 'विनाशकाले विपरीत बुद्धि' लोकोक्ति का साक्षात् उदाहरण है। महर्षि वाल्मीकि यहाँ स्पष्ट करते हैं कि तारा की सलाह शत-प्रतिशत सही (पथ्यम्) थी। परन्तु, जब 'काल' (मृत्यु) निकट आता है, तो मनुष्य की विवेक-शक्ति क्षीण हो जाती है। वाली की अस्वीकृति उसके अहंकार के कारण नहीं, बल्कि उसके प्रारब्ध के कारण थी। जैसे रोगी को कड़वी लेकिन जीवनरक्षक औषधि अच्छी नहीं लगती, वैसे ही मृत्यु के पाश में बंधे वाली को तारा की हितकारी सीख रुचिकर नहीं लगी।
