ताम् एवम् ब्रुवतीम् ताराम् ताराधिप निभ आननाम् ।
वाली निर्भर्त्सयामास वचनम् च इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥४-१६-१॥
tām evam bruvatīm tārām tārādhipa nibha ānanām । vālī nirbhartsayāmāsa vacanam ca idam abravīt ॥ ॥4-16-1॥
Translation
Vali reprimanded Tara, who was speaking thus and whose face resembled the moon (Lord of the Stars), and he spoke these words.

इस प्रकार कहती हुई, चंद्रमा (ताराधिप) के समान मुख वाली उस तारा को वाली ने डाँटा (तिरस्कार किया) और यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
A striking juxtaposition is presented here. Tara is described as tārādhipa-nibhānanām (having a face like the moon), symbolizing beauty, coolness, and wisdom. In contrast, Vali responds with nirbhartsayāmāsa (reproach/scolding). Vali's rejection of the 'moon-faced' one indicates his rejection of the light of reason. The verse sets the scene for Vali’s aggressive monologue, highlighting his inability to appreciate the grace and wisdom offered to him.

यहाँ एक विरोधाभास (contrast) है। तारा का मुख 'ताराधिप निभ' (चंद्रमा के समान सौम्य और शीतल) है, जो शांति और विवेक का प्रतीक है। दूसरी ओर, वाली क्रोध से जल रहा है। उसने तारा के प्रेमपूर्ण परामर्श का उत्तर 'निर्भर्त्सयामास' (भर्त्सना/डांट) से दिया। यह वाली के पतन की शुरुआत है—उसने अपनी अर्धांगिनी और मंत्री समान पत्नी का अपमान किया। क्रोधांध व्यक्ति सुंदरता और सत्य दोनों का अनादर करता है, यही इस श्लोक का भाव है।
