श्लिष्टम् मुष्टिम् समुद्यम्य संरब्धतरम् आगतः ।
सुग्रीवो अपि समुद्दिश्य वालिनम् हेम मालिनम् ॥ ॥४-१६-१८॥
śliṣṭam muṣṭim samudyamya saṃrabdhataram āgataḥ । sugrīvo api samuddiśya vālinam hema mālinam ॥ ॥4-16-18॥
Translation
Sugriva too, clenching his fist tight and filled with even greater fury, advanced, targeting Vali who was adorned with the golden garland.

सुग्रीव भी अपनी मुट्ठी कसकर और अत्यंत क्रोधित होकर (संरब्धतरम्), स्वर्ण-माला धारण करने वाले वाली को लक्ष्य करके (लड़ने के लिए) आगे बढ़ा।
English Commentary
The duel formally begins with mirrored actions. Just as Vali charged, Sugrīvo api (Sugriva also) raises his clenched fist (śliṣṭam muṣṭim). The epithet hema mālinam (garlanded with gold) is significant; it refers to the celestial garland given by Indra which grants Vali invincibility and drains his opponent's strength. Sugriva targeting the wearer of this garland signifies his newfound confidence, bolstered by Rama's promise, overriding the fear of the magical advantage Vali possesses.

यहाँ 'सुग्रीवो अपि' (सुग्रीव भी) पद महत्वपूर्ण है। वाली तो पहले से ही मुक्का तानकर बढ़ा था (श्लोक 17), अब सुग्रीव ने भी उसी मुद्रा में उत्तर दिया। 'हेम मालिनम्' (स्वर्ण माला धारी) विशेषण वाली की विशिष्टता को दर्शाता है। यह वही माला है जो इंद्र ने दी थी और जो वाली की विजय और प्राणों की रक्षा करती है। सुग्रीव का उसी मालाधारी भाई को लक्ष्य बनाना यह दिखाता है कि अब वह राम के भरोसे इतना निडर हो गया है कि वाली की अजेय शक्ति (माला) का भी उसे भय नहीं रहा।
