तम् वाली क्रोध ताम्राक्षः सुग्रीवम् रण कोविदम् ।
आपतंतम् महा वेगम् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥४-१६-१९॥
tam vālī krodha tāmrākṣaḥ sugrīvam raṇa kovidam । āpatantam mahā vegam idam vacanam abravīt ॥ ॥4-16-19॥
Translation
Then Vali, his eyes copper-red with rage, spoke these words to the battle-skilled Sugriva who was rushing at him with great speed.

तब क्रोध से लाल आँखों वाले वाली ने, महान वेग से झपटते हुए रण-कुशल (रण कोविद) सुग्रीव से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
Vali’s physical reaction matches his internal state—his eyes are tāmrākṣaḥ (copper-red) with fury. Interestingly, Valmiki describes Sugriva as raṇa kovidam (expert in war). This acknowledges that despite being the underdog, Sugriva is a skilled warrior in his own right. Vali addresses the onrushing Sugriva, likely to intimidate him before the first blow lands. The collision of mahā vegam (great speed) and krodha (anger) sets the stage for the physical impact.
