अधरितानाम् शूराणाम् समरेषु अनिवर्तिनाम् ।
धर्षणाम् अर्षणम् भीरु मरणात् अतिरिच्यते ॥ ॥४-१६-३॥
adharṣitānām śūrāṇām samareṣu anivartinām । dharṣaṇām arṣaṇam bhīru maraṇāt atiricyate ॥ ॥4-16-3॥
Translation
O timid one! For heroes who have never been overpowered and who never retreat in battle, tolerating an insult is worse than death.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे भीरु (डरपोक)! जो शूरवीर कभी पराजित नहीं हुए और युद्ध से कभी पीछे नहीं हटते, उनके लिए अपमान (ललकार) को सहन करना मृत्यु से भी बढ़कर (कष्टदायी) है।
English Commentary
Vali articulates the warrior code (Kshatriya Dharma) here. He calls Tara bhīru (timid), dismissing her caution as feminine fear. He asserts that for the undefeated (adharṣitānām) who never retreat (anivartinām), swallowing an insult is maraṇāt atiricyate (exceeds death/is worse than death). This explains his psychological compulsion to fight; he views ignoring the challenge as a fate worse than dying. His pride dictates that honor must be preserved at any cost, even life itself.
हिंदी टीका
यह श्लोक वाली के जीवन-दर्शन को परिभाषित करता है। वह तारा को 'भीरु' (डरपोक स्वभाव वाली) कहता है, क्योंकि वह सोचता है कि स्त्रियाँ युद्ध के सम्मान (Honor) को नहीं समझतीं। वाली का मानना है कि 'धर्षणाम्' (तिरस्कार/अपमान) को पी जाना मृत्यु से भी बदतर है। एक अपराजेय योद्धा ('अधर्षितानाम्') के लिए अपनी साख (Reputation) ही सब कुछ होती है। यह वीर रस का कथन है, परन्तु यहाँ यह वाली के विनाश का कारण बन रहा है क्योंकि वह अपनी आन-बान के लिए विवेक को त्याग रहा है।
