अहम हि अजि स्थितस्य अस्य करिष्यामि यत् ईप्सितम् ।
वृक्षैः मुष्टि प्रहारैः च पीडितः प्रति यास्यति ॥ ॥४-१६-८॥
aham hi aji sthitasya asya kariṣyāmi yat īpsitam । vṛkṣaiḥ muṣṭi prahāraiḥ ca pīḍitaḥ prati yāsyati ॥ ॥4-16-8॥
Translation
I will indeed fulfill the desire of him who stands in the battlefield. Tormented by strikes of trees and fists, he will flee again.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं युद्धभूमि में डटे हुए इस सुग्रीव की (युद्ध की) इच्छा पूरी कर दूँगा। वृक्षों और मुक्कों के प्रहार से पीड़ित होकर वह वापस भाग जाएगा।
English Commentary
Vali predicts the combat sequence based on past data. He envisions a traditional Vanara duel involving trees (vṛkṣaiḥ) and fists (muṣṭi). His assertion that Sugriva will flee (prati yāsyati) after being beaten shows he expects a repetition of their previous encounter. Vali sees himself as the benevolent punisher satisfying a petulant child's wish (īpsitam) for a fight. He is completely blind to the external intervention that alters the balance of power.

वाली युद्ध का परिणाम पहले से तय मानकर चल रहा है। उसे विश्वास है कि इतिहास खुद को दोहराएगा। जैसे पहले सुग्रीव पिटकर भागा था, वैसे ही इस बार भी 'मुष्टि प्रहारैः' (मुक्कों की मार) से पीड़ित होकर 'प्रति यास्यति' (लौट जाएगा/भाग जाएगा)। वाली युद्ध को एक शारीरिक मल्लयुद्ध (wrestling match) के रूप में देख रहा है जहाँ वृक्ष और मुक्के ही हथियार होंगे। वह राम के बाणों की संभावना को पूरी तरह नकार चुका है। यह उसका अति-आत्मविश्वास (hubris) है जो उसे विनाश की ओर ले जा रहा है।
