Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
लक्ष्मण अनुचरो रामो ददर्श उपससर्प च ।
तम् तथा पतितम् वीरम् गत अर्चिष्मतम् इव अनलम् ॥ ॥४-१७-१२॥
Lakṣmaṇa anucaro rāmo dadarśa upasasarpa ca |
Tam tathā patitam vīram gata arciṣmatam iva analam ॥4-17-12॥
Translation
Rama, followed by Lakshmana, looked at him and approached that fallen hero, who lay like a fire that had lost its flame.

लक्ष्मण जिनके पीछे चल रहे थे, ऐसे राम ने उस गिरे हुए वीर को देखा और वे उसके पास गए, जो बुझी हुई ज्वाला वाली अग्नि के समान पड़ा था।
English Commentary
The narrative moves from the physical strike to the moral confrontation. Rama approaches ('upasasarpa') the dying king. अब क्रिया (Action) बदल रही है। बाण छोड़ने के बाद राम दूर खड़े नहीं रहते, बल्कि 'उपससर्प' (समीप गए)। यह राम की मर्यादा है; वे अपने शत्रु के अंतिम क्षणों में उससे विमुख नहीं होते। 'लक्ष्मण अनुचरो' (लक्ष्मण पीछे थे) दर्शाता है कि मुख्य संवाद राम और वाली के बीच होना है, लक्ष्मण साक्षी और रक्षक के रूप में साथ हैं। राम का पास जाना यह भी संकेत है कि वे अपने कार्य की जिम्मेदारी स्वीकारने को तैयार हैं।
