Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सानुक्रोशो महोत्साहः समयज्ञो दृढव्रतः ।
इति एतत् सर्व भूतानि कथयन्ति यशो भुवि ॥ ॥४-१७-१८॥
Sānukrośo mahotsāhaḥ samayajño dṛḍhavrataḥ । Iti etat sarva bhūtāni kathayanti yaśo bhuvi ॥ ॥4-17-18॥
Translation
He is compassionate, full of great enthusiasm, aware of appropriate timing (and conduct), and firm in his vows—thus do all beings on earth narrate your glory.

वे दयालु हैं, महान उत्साही हैं, समय (उचित-अनुचित काल) के ज्ञाता हैं और अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पर दृढ़ रहने वाले हैं—इस पृथ्वी पर सभी प्राणी आपके इस यश का गुणगान करते हैं।
English Commentary
Vali continues to outline the global consensus regarding Rama's character. The term Samayajña is particularly weighted; it means one who knows the propriety of time and occasion—essentially, one who knows when to act and when to refrain. By attributing this quality to Rama, Vali underscores the perceived impropriety of the timing of the arrow shot. Furthermore, acknowledging Rama as Sānukrośa (compassionate) makes the lethal strike seem even more jarring. Vali is essentially stating, "The world praises you for these qualities, and I relied on that public reputation," emphasizing that his lack of caution was due to his trust in Rama's reputed integrity, not due to negligence.

वाली अपनी बात को विस्तार देते हुए कहता है कि राम की कीर्ति केवल अयोध्या तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि 'सर्व भूतानि' (सभी प्राणी) उनके यश को जानते हैं। 'समयज्ञो' शब्द यहाँ महत्वपूर्ण है; इसका अर्थ है वह जो जानता है कि किस समय क्या करना उचित है (Time and Context aware)। वाली व्यंग्य कर रहा है कि जो व्यक्ति 'समयज्ञ' माना जाता है, उसने ऐसा अनुचित समय चुना जब शत्रु दूसरे युद्ध में व्यस्त था। 'दृढव्रतः' (दृढ़ व्रत वाला) कहकर वाली यह प्रश्न कर रहा है कि क्षत्रिय धर्म के पालन का व्रत अब कहाँ गया? यह श्लोक राम की सार्वभौमिक प्रतिष्ठा (Universal Reputation) और उनके वर्तमान कृत्य के बीच की खाई को उजागर करता है।
