Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तान् गुणान् संप्रधार्य अहम् अग्र्यम् च अभिजनम् तव ।
तारया प्रतिषिद्धो अपि सुग्रीवेण समागतः ॥ ॥४-१७-२०॥
Tān guṇān sampradhārya aham agryam ca abhijanam tava । Tārayā pratiṣiddho api sugrīveṇa samāgataḥ ॥ ॥4-17-20॥
Translation
Reflecting upon those virtues and your eminent ancestry, even though I was forbidden by Tara, I came out to meet (fight) Sugriva.

आपके उन गुणों और आपके श्रेष्ठ कुल का विचार करके ही, तारा द्वारा रोके जाने पर भी, मैं सुग्रीव से भिड़ने (मिलने) के लिए चला आया।
English Commentary
This verse reveals the tragic irony of Vali's demise. He admits that he ignored the counsel of his wise wife, Tara, who had warned him of the alliance between Sugriva and Rama. Vali explains his rationale: he did not ignore her out of arrogance, but out of faith in Rama’s lineage and character (abhijanam and guṇān). He assumed that a scion of the Raghu clan would never strike a warrior engaged in a duel with another. Essentially, Vali claims he walked into the trap not because he was foolish, but because he overestimated Rama's adherence to fair play. This turns the blade of guilt towards Rama, suggesting he exploited Vali's respect for him.

यह श्लोक घटनाक्रम में एक महत्वपूर्ण मोड़ को उजागर करता है। वाली बताता है कि उसकी पत्नी तारा, जो बुद्धिमती थी, ने उसे चेतावनी दी थी कि राम सुग्रीव की सहायता कर रहे हैं। परंतु, वाली ने तारा की सलाह को अनसुना कर दिया। क्यों? अहंकार के कारण नहीं, बल्कि राम के चरित्र पर विश्वास के कारण। 'तान् गुणान् संप्रधार्य'—अर्थात् "मैंने सोचा कि राम जैसे गुणी और कुलीन व्यक्ति अधर्मपूर्वक युद्ध नहीं करेंगे।" वाली यह कह रहा है कि उसकी मृत्यु का कारण उसका 'अति-विश्वास' (Trust) था जो उसने राम की नैतिकता पर किया। यह राम के लिए एक बहुत बड़ा आक्षेप है कि उन्होंने एक विश्वास करने वाले का भरोसा तोड़ा।
