न माम् अन्येन संरब्धम् प्रमत्तम् वेद्धुम् अर्हसि ।
इति मे बुद्धिर् उत्पन्ना बभूव अदर्शने तव ॥ ॥४-१७-२१॥
Na mām anyena samrabdham pramattam veddhum arhasi । Iti me buddhir utpannā babhūva adarśane tava ॥ ॥4-17-21॥
Translation
"You would not deign to strike me while I am furiously engaged with another and inattentive (to you)"—such was the thought that arose in my mind regarding your invisibility (absence from direct sight).
हिंदी अनुवाद
"जब तक मैं आपको देख नहीं लेता (या जब तक मैं युद्ध के लिए ललकारा नहीं जाता), आप मुझ पर प्रहार नहीं करेंगे, विशेषकर जब मैं किसी और के साथ युद्ध में व्यस्त और असावधान हूँ"—यही मेरी बुद्धि (सोच) थी।
English Commentary
Vali elucidates his tactical calculation, which proved fatal. He uses the term pramattam (distracted/inattentive/intoxicated with battle fury) to describe his state while fighting Sugriva. He believed it was beneath Rama's dignity to strike a distracted combatant. The phrase adarśane tava (in your absence/while you were unseen) suggests that even though he knew Rama might be nearby, he concluded that Rama would reveal himself before attacking. This verse emphasizes that Vali's lack of defense against the arrow was a calculated risk based on the assumption of chivalry, reinforcing the accusation that Rama violated the warrior's code.

वाली यहाँ अपनी उस भ्रांति को स्पष्ट करता है जिसके कारण वह मारा गया। 'प्रमत्तम्' का अर्थ है जो असावधान है या किसी और कार्य (नशे/आवेग) में मग्न है। युद्ध के नियमों के अनुसार, 'प्रमत्त' शत्रु पर वार नहीं करना चाहिए। वाली कहता है कि जब तक आप 'अदर्शन' (दिखाई नहीं दे रहे) थे, मुझे लगा कि आप मर्यादा का पालन करेंगे और सामने आकर ही युद्ध करेंगे। उसे विश्वास था कि राम जैसा वीर छिपकर वार नहीं करेगा। यह श्लोक उस मनोवैज्ञानिक स्थिति का वर्णन करता है जिसमें वाली ने सुग्रीव से युद्ध किया—वह राम की उपस्थिति से बेपरवाह था क्योंकि उसे राम के 'धर्म' पर भरोसा था।
