न त्वाम् विनिहत आत्मानम् धर्म ध्वजम् अधार्मिकम् ।
जाने पाप समाचारम् तृणैः कूपम् इव आवृतम् ॥ ॥४-१७-२२॥
Na tvām vinihata ātmānam dharma dhvajam adhārmikam । Jāne pāpa samācāram tṛṇaiḥ kūpam iva āvṛtam ॥ ॥4-17-22॥
Translation
I did not know that you were a destroyer of the self, a hypocrite bearing the flag of righteousness but unrighteous in reality, and one of sinful conduct—like a well covered by grass.

मैं नहीं जानता था कि आप आत्म-तत्व को मारने वाले, धर्म की ध्वजा फहराने वाले (पाखंडी), अधर्मी और पापपूर्ण आचरण करने वाले हैं, जैसे कि घास से ढका हुआ कोई कुआँ हो।
English Commentary
This is arguably the most scathing verse in Vali's speech. He utilizes powerful metaphors to dismantle Rama's image. He calls Rama Dharma Dhvajam—literally "flag-bearer of righteousness," but used here to mean a hypocrite who uses religion as a mask. The epithet Adhārmikam (unrighteous) directly contradicts Rama's core identity. The simile of the "well covered by grass" (tṛṇaiḥ kūpam iva āvṛtam) is devastating; it depicts Rama not just as a killer, but as a hidden trap that looks innocent on the surface but is deadly underneath. Vali claims he was deceived by the camouflage of virtue that Rama wears.
