फल मूल अशनम् नित्यम् वानरम् वन गोचरम् ।
माम् इह अप्रतियुध्यन्तम् अन्येन च समागतम् ॥ ॥४-१७-२५॥
Phala mūla aśanam nityam vānaram vana gocaram । Mām iha apratiyudhyantam anyena ca samāgatam ॥ ॥4-17-25॥
Translation
I am a monkey, a dweller of the forest, who subsists daily on fruits and roots. I was not fighting against you here, and I was engaged with another.

मैं फल-मूल खाने वाला, वन में विचरण करने वाला एक वानर हूँ। मैं आपसे युद्ध नहीं कर रहा था और किसी अन्य (सुग्रीव) के साथ भिड़ा हुआ था। (फिर भी आपने मुझे मारा?)
English Commentary
Vali underscores the disparity between himself and Rama to highlight the absurdity and unfairness of the attack. By describing himself as a simple Vanara who lives on fruits and roots (phala mūla aśanam), he implies that he is merely a forest creature, not a political rival worthy of an imperial prince's wrath. There is a tone of pathos here: "I am just a wild animal minding my own business." Reperting the fact that he was apratiyudhyantam (not fighting against Rama), Vali questions the heroism involved in hunting down a distracted creature of the wild. It suggests Rama's action was not a glorious conquest, but a mere hunt.

वाली यहाँ अपनी 'जाति' और 'जीवनशैली' का हवाला देकर राम के कृत्य को और भी तुच्छ सिद्ध करने का प्रयास करता है। वह कहता है कि हम तो 'वन गोचर' (वन्य जीव) हैं जो कंद-मूल खाते हैं; हमारा और आप जैसे क्षत्रिय राजकुमारों का क्या बैर? क्षत्रियों का युद्ध क्षत्रियों से होता है, न कि वनवासी वानरों से। वह पुनः दोहराता है 'अप्रतियुध्यन्तम्'—मैं आपसे नहीं लड़ रहा था। यह श्लोक राम की महानता को कम करने (Belittling) का प्रयास है—क्या रघुवंश के वीर के लिए एक वानर को, जो उससे लड़ भी नहीं रहा था, छिपकर मारना शोभा देता है?
