त्वम् नराधिपतेः पुत्रः प्रतीतः प्रियदर्शनः ।
लिन्गम् अपि अस्ति ते राजन् दृश्यते धर्म सम्हितम् ॥ ॥४-१७-२६॥
Tvam narādhipateḥ putraḥ pratītaḥ priyadarśanaḥ । Lingam api asti te rājan dṛśyate dharma samhitam ॥ ॥4-17-26॥
Translation
You are the son of a king, renowned, and pleasant to behold. O King! You possess the insignias (of royalty/righteousness) and you appear to be endowed with Dharma.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आप राजा के पुत्र हैं, विख्यात हैं और प्रियदर्शन हैं। हे राजन! आपके पास (क्षत्रियों/तपस्वियों के) चिह्न भी हैं और आप धर्म से युक्त दिखाई देते हैं। (किंतु आपका कर्म इसके विपरीत है।)
English Commentary
Vali concludes this segment of his accusation by revisiting Rama's appearance. He acknowledges the Lingam—the external marks or insignias of royalty and asceticism that Rama bears. Rama looks like a Dharma-samhitam (one united with righteousness). However, in the context of the betrayal Vali just experienced, this observation is heavily laden with sarcasm. Vali is essentially saying, "You look the part. You have the costume and the props of a righteous king, but your actions betray the disguise." It forces the listener (and Rama) to confront the uncomfortable gap between looking righteous and acting righteously.

यह श्लोक वाली के पिछले तर्कों का सारांश है और इसमें गहरा व्यंग्य (Sarcasm) छिपा है। 'लिन्गम्' का अर्थ है चिह्न या पहचान (जैसे धनुष-बाण, जटा, वल्कल वस्त्र आदि)। वाली कह रहा है कि "बाहर से तो आप पूरे धर्मात्मा और क्षत्रिय लगते हैं।" वह 'दृश्यते' (दिखाई देते हैं) शब्द पर जोर देता है, जिसका अर्थ है कि यह केवल एक दृश्य भ्रम (Visual Illusion) है। वास्तविकता (Reality) वह बाण है जिसने वाली का सीना चीर दिया। यह 'मुख में राम, बगल में छुरी' वाली कहावत का शास्त्रीय रूप है। वाली राम के बाहरी स्वरूप और आंतरिक कर्म के बीच के द्वंद्व को उजागर कर रहा है।
