Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
हत्वा बाणेन काकुत्स्थ माम् इह अनपराधिनम् ।
किम् वक्ष्यसि सताम् मध्य कर्म कृत्वा जुगुप्सितम् ॥ ॥४-१७-३५॥
hatvā bāṇena kākutstha mām iha anaparādhinaṃ । kim vakṣyasi satām madhye karma kṛtvā jugupsitam ॥ ॥4-17-35॥
Translation
O Kakutstha, having killed me, an innocent one, with an arrow here, what will you say in the midst of the virtuous after committing such a disgusting deed?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे काकुत्स्थ! मुझ निरपराध को यहाँ बाण से मारकर, ऐसा घृणित (जुगुप्सित) कर्म करने के बाद, तुम सज्जनों के बीच क्या कहोगे (कैसे मुँह दिखाओगे)?
English Commentary
Vali appeals to the court of public opinion and history. Addressing Rama by his noble ancestor's name (Kakutstha), he asks how Rama plans to justify this 'Jugupsitam' (disgusting/reprehensible) act amongst the Satam (the virtuous/assembly of the wise). Killing an innocent (Anaparadhinam)—as Vali maintains he has done no wrong to Rama—from behind is not a tale for epic songs. Vali predicts that this act will be a source of embarrassment for Rama, challenging him to formulate a defense that can withstand the scrutiny of the righteous.

वाली अब 'लोक-लज्जा' (Public Shame) का अस्त्र चलाता है। 'काकुत्स्थ' संबोधन व्यंग्यात्मक है क्योंकि ककुत्स्थ राजा अपनी वीरता और न्याय के लिए प्रसिद्ध थे। वाली पूछता है कि जब श्रीराम अयोध्या लौटेंगे या ऋषियों की सभा में बैठेंगे, तो क्या वे गर्व से कह पाएंगे कि 'मैंने एक वानर को पेड़ के पीछे छिपकर मारा'? 'जुगुप्सितम्' (घिनौना) शब्द का प्रयोग करके वाली श्रीराम को यह अहसास दिलाता है कि यह विजय उनकी कीर्ति पर एक धब्बा है जिसे इतिहास कभी नहीं मिटा पाएगा।
