भूमौ निपतितस्या अपि तस्य देहम् महात्मनः ।
न श्रीर् जहाति न प्राणाः न तेजो न पराक्रमः ॥ ॥४-१७-४॥
Bhūmau nipatitasya api tasya deham mahātmanaḥ |
Na śrīr jahāti na prāṇā na tejo na parākramaḥ ॥4-17-4॥
Translation
Even though that high-souled one had fallen to the ground, neither his royal glory, nor his life force, nor his radiance, nor his valor deserted his body.

यद्यपि वह महात्मा (वाली) भूमि पर गिरा हुआ था, फिर भी राजसी शोभा (श्री), प्राण, तेज और पराक्रम ने उसके शरीर का त्याग नहीं किया था।
English Commentary
This verse presents a paradox: a fallen warrior who retains the aura of a living king. Typically, death strips a warrior of 'tejas' (radiance) and 'parākrama' (valor), but Vali retains them all. The use of 'mahātmanaḥ' (great-souled) indicates that his spiritual stature matches his physical strength. This preservation of glory serves as a narrative bridge to the next verse, hinting at a divine intervention or object that sustains his life force even after a fatal blow.

यह श्लोक वाली के अलौकिक व्यक्तित्व को दर्शाता है। सामान्यतः मृत्यु के निकट आने पर शरीर निस्तेज हो जाता है, परन्तु वाली 'महात्मा' है। 'न श्रीर् जहाति' (लक्ष्मी ने नहीं छोड़ा) यह दर्शाता है कि वह अभी भी राजा के समान ही भव्य दिख रहा है। यह स्थिति पाठकों के मन में जिज्ञासा उत्पन्न करती है कि आखिर ऐसा क्या है जो प्राणान्तक बाण लगने के बाद भी वाली के प्राण और तेज को थामे हुए है? इसका उत्तर अगले श्लोक में स्वर्ण-माला के रूप में दिया गया है।
