Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
चर्म च अस्थि च मे राजन् न स्पृशन्ति मनीषिणः ।
अभक्ष्याणि च मांसानि सो अहम् पंच नखो हतः ॥ ॥४-१७-४०॥
carma ca asthi ca me rājan na spṛśanti manīṣiṇaḥ । abhakṣyāṇi ca māṃsāni so aham panca nakho hataḥ ॥ ॥4-17-40॥
Translation
O King, my skin and bones are not to be touched by the wise, and my flesh is inedible. Yet, I, such a five-clawed one, have been killed by you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राजन! मेरा चमड़ा और मेरी हड्डियाँ विद्वानों (सज्जनों) द्वारा स्पर्श करने योग्य नहीं हैं और मेरा मांस भी अभक्ष्य है। ऐसा मैं पाँच नाखूनों वाला वानर, तुम्हारे द्वारा मारा गया।
English Commentary
Vali reinforces the futility of his death. Unlike the deer or tiger, whose skins serve as sacred seats for ascetics, or elephants whose ivory is precious, a monkey's carcass holds no utility. "Na sprishanti manishinah" indicates that wise men avoid touching monkey remains due to ritual impurity. Since his flesh is inedible and his remains useless, Vali asserts that his killing serves no purpose whatsoever. It strips the act of any utilitarian justification, framing it as senseless destruction rather than a kingly hunt.

यह पिछले तर्क का विस्तार है। मृग (हिरण) या व्याघ्र की खाल का उपयोग ऋषि-मुनि आसन के रूप में करते हैं, और कुछ जानवरों की हड्डियों का उपयोग उपकरणों या आभूषणों में होता है। किन्तु वानर की खाल और हड्डियाँ अपवित्र मानी जाती हैं और 'मनीषिणः' (विद्वान) उन्हें स्पर्श भी नहीं करते। वाली पूछता है कि जब मेरे शरीर का कोई भी अंग—न मांस, न खाल, न हड्डी—किसी उपयोग में आ सकता है, तो मेरा वध क्यों किया गया? यह 'निरर्थक हिंसा' का आरोप है।
