Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स तया मालया वीरो हैमया हरियूथपः ।
संध्यानुगत पर्यन्तः पयोधर इव अभवत् ॥ ॥४-१७-६॥
Sa tayā mālayā vīro haimayā hariyūthapaḥ |
Saṃdhyānugata paryantaḥ payodhara iva abhavat ॥4-17-6॥
Translation
Adorned with that golden garland, the hero, the lord of monkey troops, looked like a rain cloud edged with the glow of the evening twilight.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस स्वर्णमाला को पहने हुए वह वीर वानरराज (वाली) ऐसा प्रतीत हो रहा था मानो संध्याकालीन सूर्य की लालिमा से युक्त कोई मेघ (बादल) हो।
English Commentary
Valmiki paints a contrasting visual masterpiece here. Vali represents the dark, massive rain cloud ('payodhara'). The golden necklace represents the warm, golden hues of sunset ('sandhyā'). The combination creates an image of dying light—beautiful yet signaling the end of the day. This metaphor aligns with Vali's impending death; just as twilight marks the transition from day to night, Vali is in the transition from life to death, glowing one last time.
हिंदी टीका
यह एक अत्यंत कलात्मक उपमा है। वाली का शरीर श्याम वर्ण (गहरा/काला) है, जिसे 'पयोधर' (मेघ) कहा गया है। उसके गले में चमकती हुई सोने की माला 'संध्या' (गोधूलि बेला की धूप) के समान है। जैसे काले बादल पर सूर्य की सुनहरी किरणें पड़ती हैं तो वह सुंदर दिखता है, वैसे ही मृत्युशैया पर पड़ा वाली उस माला के कारण अद्भुत और विस्मयकारी लग रहा है। यह दृश्य करुण रस के बीच भी सौन्दर्य बोध कराता है।
