चपलः चपलैः सार्धम् वानरैः अकृत आत्मभिः ।
जात्यंध इव जात्यंधैः मंत्रयन् द्रक्ष्यसे नु किम् ॥४-१८-१६॥
capalaḥ capalaiḥ sārdham vānaraiḥ akṛta ātmabhiḥ |
jātyaṃdha iva jātyandhaiḥ maṃtrayan drakṣyase nu kim ॥4-18-16॥
Translation
Being fickle yourself, and consulting with other fickle monkeys who have not mastered their own selves, what can you possibly perceive? It is like a blind man consulting with other blind men.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम स्वयं चंचल हो और जिन वानरों ने अपने मन को वश में नहीं किया है, उन चंचल वानरों के साथ मंत्रणा करते हुए तुम क्या देख सकोगे? यह तो वैसा ही है जैसे एक जन्मान्ध (अंधे) का दूसरे जन्मान्धों के साथ विचार-विमर्श करना।
English Commentary
This is a stern rebuke regarding Vali's intellect and capacity for judgment. Rama states that monkeys are inherently "capala" (fickle/restless) and "akṛta-ātmabhiḥ" (uncultured souls/lacking self-control). A council of such beings cannot grasp the profound nuances of Dharma and statecraft. Using the analogy of "the blind leading the blind," Rama dismisses Vali's understanding of ethics entirely. Vali likely acted on the advice of sycophants or his own unchecked impulses when he banished Sugriva and took Ruma. Therefore, Vali's pretension to lecture Rama on Dharma is dismissed as ignorance. This highlights the distinction between the disciplined intellect of a Rishi/King and the impulsive nature of a Vanara.

यह राम की ओर से वाली की बुद्धि और निर्णय क्षमता पर कठोर प्रहार है। राम कहते हैं कि वानर स्वभाव से ही 'चपल' (अस्थिर) होते हैं और 'अकृतात्मभिः' (असंयमित चित्त वाले) होते हैं। ऐसे लोगों की सभा धर्म और नीति के गूढ़ तत्वों को नहीं समझ सकती। राम 'अंधे और अंधे' का दृष्टान्त देकर यह बताते हैं कि वाली की धर्म विषयक समझ शून्य है। उसने अपने जैसे ही कामलोलुप या अज्ञानी मंत्रियों की सलाह से सुग्रीव को निकाला और उसकी पत्नी का हरण किया। इसलिए, वाली का यह दावा करना कि वह धर्म जानता है और राम अधर्मी हैं, हास्यास्पद है। यह श्लोक क्षत्रिय विवेक और वानर चपलता के बीच का अंतर स्पष्ट करता है।
