Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तं निष्प्रभम् इव आदित्यं मुक्त तोयम् इवाम्बुदम् ।
उक्त वाक्यं हरि श्रेष्ठम् उपशांतम् इवानलम् ॥ ॥४-१८-२॥
taṃ niṣprabham iva ādityaṃ mukta toyam ivāmbudam । ukta vākyaṃ hari śreṣṭham upaśāntam ivānalam ॥ ॥4-18-2॥
Translation
(Rama spoke) to that best of monkeys who had finished speaking and now appeared like a sun without luster, a cloud without water, and a fire that has been extinguished.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(राम ने) उन वानर श्रेष्ठ (वाली) से, जो अपनी बात कह चुके थे और अब प्रभा-हीन सूर्य, जल-हीन बादल और बुझी हुई आग के समान दिखाई दे रहे थे, (कहा)।
English Commentary
A series of similes depicts the tragic fall of the mighty Vali. He is compared to natural forces stripped of their power: a sun without light, a cloud without rain, a fire extinguished. This imagery evokes pity and respect for the fallen hero (Hari shreshtham). It highlights that the kinetic energy of the battle and the verbal debate has drained away, leaving only the cold reality of death. Rama addresses this diminishing force with the gravity required of a judge.

उपमाओं की झड़ी लगाकर वाल्मीकि जी वाली की वर्तमान स्थिति का वर्णन करते हैं। वाली सूर्य जैसा तेजस्वी था, पर अब 'निष्प्रभ' है। वह बादल जैसा गर्जन करने वाला था, पर अब 'मुक्त तोयम्' (खाली) है। वह अग्नि जैसा था, पर अब 'उपशांतम्' (शांत) है। ये उपमाएँ एक महान शक्ति के पतन को दर्शाती हैं। राम ऐसे वीर के प्रति सम्मान रखते हुए भी अपने कर्तव्य (दंड) की व्याख्या करने जा रहे हैं।
