राजभिः धृत दण्डाः च कृत्वा पापानि मानवाः ।
निर्मलाः स्वर्गम् आयान्ति सन्तः सुकृतिनो यथा ॥४-१८-३१॥
rājabhiḥ dhṛta daṇḍāḥ ca kṛtvā pāpāni mānavāḥ |
nirmalāḥ svargam āyānti santaḥ sukṛtino yathā ॥4-18-31॥
Translation
(Manu says:) Men who have committed sins but are punished by kings become pure and go to heaven, just like the virtuous saints.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(मनु कहते हैं:) पाप करके राजाओं द्वारा दंडित किए गए मनुष्य, पापमुक्त (निर्मल) होकर स्वर्ग को वैसे ही जाते हैं जैसे पुण्यवान् (संत) लोग।
English Commentary
Rama quotes a famous verse from Manu Smriti (8.318). Its philosophical and spiritual significance is profound. Punishment inflicted by the King (especially capital punishment) is considered an expiation for the sinner's crime. By enduring the punishment, the karma is nullified, rendering the soul 'nirmala' (pure). Rama consoles Vali, implying that dying at his hands is not a curse but a blessing in disguise. Through this punishment, Vali's sins are cleansed, making him eligible for heaven. This reflects Rama's compassion, offering liberation even through punishment.

यह मनुस्मृति का प्रसिद्ध श्लोक (८.३१८) है जिसे राम उद्धृत कर रहे हैं। इसका दार्शनिक और आध्यात्मिक महत्व बहुत गहरा है। राजा द्वारा दिया गया दंड (विशेषकर मृत्युदंड) पापी के पाप का प्रायश्चित (Expiation) माना जाता है। दंड भोगने से उसका कर्मफल नष्ट हो जाता है और वह 'निर्मल' हो जाता है। राम वाली को सांत्वना दे रहे हैं कि मेरे हाथों मरना तुम्हारे लिए शाप नहीं, वरदान है। इस दंड के माध्यम से तुम्हारा पाप धुल गया है और अब तुम स्वर्ग के अधिकारी हो। यह राम की करुणा है जो दंड में भी मुक्ति का द्वार देख रही है।
