Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
माम् अपि अवगतम् धर्मात् व्यतिक्रान्त पुरस्कृतम् ।
धर्म संहितया वाचा धर्मज्ञ परिपालय ॥४-१८-४८॥
mām api avagatam dharmāt vyatikrānta puraskṛtam । dharma saṃhitayā vācā dharmajña paripālaya ॥ ॥4-18-48॥
Translation
"O Knower of Dharma, understand me as one who had deviated from righteousness. Now, protect me with words endowed with Dharma."

"हे धर्मज्ञ! मैं धर्म से विमुख हो गया था, यह मैं जानता हूँ। अब आप अपने धर्मयुक्त वचनों से मेरा पालन (उद्धार) करें।"
English Commentary
This is a plea for spiritual salvation. Vali explicitly confesses that he had transgressed the path of Dharma. The word 'paripalaya' here does not mean saving his physical life—he knows he is dying—but rather saving his soul or reputation. He asks Rama to "protect" him using righteous words, essentially seeking absolution. By acknowledging his deviation and asking the enforcer of Dharma (Rama) for guidance, Vali seeks to die with a purified conscience, relying on Rama’s grace to wash away the sins of his past actions.
